Rebirth to Physical Life (2)

This is the conclusion to “Rebirth to Physical Life (1)”.  Part 1 should be read first, before continuing with this Part 2.  Also, I suggest you read “Universal Christian Salvation”, before proceeding here.

In “Rebirth to Physical Life (1)”, we read about God’s future for the men of ancient Sodom, and for men in both the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah in the light of Ezk.37:1-14.  A physical rebirth.  The apostle Paul wrote in Ro.11:26, “All Israel shall be saved”.  Not just a remnant!

We considered the book of Job, when he was suffering.  Jb.1:21 Tanakh KJV Septúagint “Naked came I forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there.”  Job indicated he could later be reborn from a mother’s womb, his spirit indwelling a human newborn!  Job symbolically compared himself to the ancient phoenix bird (Jb.29:18 Tanakh), which would live again after a cycle of 500 or 1,000 years.  (see Part 1.)  cf. Re.20:5 “The rest of the dead lived not again until the 1,000 years were completed.”  Re.20:8 the dead, resurrected and returned to physical life, would inhabit “nations” of the earth.

Where in the Bible do we read of an individual, a human spirit, indwelling a second physical body…a personality who later did return to a mother’s womb (as Job indicated) to live another physical life?

The prophet Elijah lived in the early 800s BC.  He was a famous character in Israel’s history.  There’s no scriptural record of Elijah’s death.  2Ki.2:1-14 he was translated into heaven by a whirlwind.

{Sidelight: Elijah’s immediate successor Elisha then received a double portion of God’s Holy Spirit, unlike other “sons of the prophets”.  Elisha performed miracles (ref 2Ki.2:9, 15, 1Co.12:28-29).  Poole Commentary 2Ki.2:9 “Elisha seems to have had a greater portion of the prophetical and miraculous gifts of God’s Spirit.”  Elisha still had his own human spirit of course; it wasn’t replaced by Elijah’s spirit!}

In the 400s BC the Lord said in Mal.3:1, “Behold, I will send My messenger; he will prepare the way before Me”.  Mal.4:5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and dreadful day of the Lord.”  Consequently, the Jews expected a bodily return of Elijah.  Alfred Edersheim The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, p.100 “The coming of Elijah…he was to appear personally.”  Traditionally, each spring they’d set a place for Elijah at the Passover Seder table and leave the door open for him.  Rabbi David Kimchi “When God shall bring him [Elijah] to life in the body, He shall send him to Israel.”  He’d be sent from God, bodily.

John the Baptist was a man “sent from God” (Jn.1:6).  Lk.1:13, 24-27 John was born 6 months before Jesus.  John’s mother was Mary’s aunt Elizabeth.  Mk.1:1-4 John “prepared the way” for Jesus’ ministry.

Jesus identified John the Baptizer as the Elijah who was to come!  Jesus said of John in Mt.11:13-14, “This is Elijah”.  John the Baptist was the Elijah who had lived approximately 900 years before!  Jesus said later in Mt.17:12-13, “Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. Then His disciples understood He was talking to them about John the Baptist.”  Cambridge Bible Mt.17:12 “[Many Jews] didn’t recognize him as the Elijah prophesied by Malachi.”  Mk.9:13 re John, “Elijah has indeed come”.

The angel Gabriel foretold Zacharias re John his son to be. Lk.1:14-17 “He will go before Him [Jesus] in the spirit and power of Elijah”.  The same human spirit in Elijah was in John the Baptizer.  Both were empowered to call the people to repentance.  Jews believe Elijah will return bodily.  He did.

Let’s now notice several similarities between the lives of Elijah and John the Baptizer:

Both dwelt in the wilderness east of the Jordan River (1Ki.17:2-6 & Mt.3:1-3, Lk.1:80).

Both characteristically wore a shaggy cloak and a leather belt (2Ki.1:8 & Mt.3:4).

Both were witnesses for the true God (1Ki.18:37 & Jn.1:14-15).

Both mocked their opponents who displayed a form of religion (1Ki.18:27 & Mt.3:7-9).

Both reproved their wicked king who disobeyed God (1Ki.18:17-18 Aháb & Lk.3:18-19 Herod Ántipas).

Both were wanted dead by the king’s evil wife (1Ki.19:2 Ahab/Jezébel & Mk.6:17-24 Herod/Herodiás).

Both endorsed their replacement, Elisha and Jesus (1Ki.19:16, 19 & Mk.1:9, Jn.3:28-30).

John the Baptizer even ministered at the same site on the east bank of the Jordan River from where Elijah had been taken up into heaven 900 years before (2Ki.2:1-14)!  Scripture reflects too many similar characteristics for it to be just coincidence.  They were the same personality, the same human spirit.

Ja.5:17 Elijah was a man with faulty human nature, as we.  He made mistakes, one serious.  1Ki.18:4, 13 Israel’s evil queen Jezebel had killed prophets of the Lord.  Elijah took vengeance by killing Jezebel’s false prophets.  1Ki.18:40 “Elijah said to them [Israel], ‘Seize the prophets of Báal [450 men, v.22]; don’t let one of them escape.’ They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishón and slew them there.”  Ellicott Commentary 1Ki.18:40 “The ruthless slaughter of Baal’s prophets.  Pulpit Commentary 1Ki.18:40 “It is true that the spirit of Elijah was not the spirit of Christianity (Lk.9:56); because our religion instructs us to leave it to Him who has said, ‘Vengeance is Mine.”

Elijah wasn’t a civil authority.  Yet he made the decision to kill the false prophets without having the authorization to kill/stone false prophets (cf. De.18:20, 13:6-11).  The Lord didn’t tell him to kill them.  Elijah chose to kill them…with the sword.  1Ki.19:1 “He had killed all the prophets with the sword.”

1Ki.19:2-3 after slaying the prophets, Elijah fled for his life in fear.  He escaped from evil queen Jezebel.

However, 900 years later John the Baptizer died by the sword, at the behest of evil queen Herodias!  ref Mk.6:17-29v.27 the king’s executioner had John “beheaded in the prison”.

Elijah, as John, eventually reaped what he’d sowed!  Ga.6:7 Paul wrote, “Whatever a man sows, this he will also reap”.  Cause and effect.  Elijah killed with the sword…John the Baptizer died by the sword.  Mt.26:52 Jesus said, “All who take up the sword will perish by the sword”.  What goes around, comes around.  Oba.1:15 “As you have done, it will be done to you.”  Ps.7:16 “His violence shall come down upon the crown of his own head.”  Barnes Notes Ps.7:16 “He’d be treated as he had designed to treat others.”  God is just.  Karma?  John reaped the payback for Elijah’s unauthorized ruthless treatment of the false prophets.  Although Jezebel failed to kill Elijah, Herodias succeeded in having him/John slain.

Jesus said John the Baptizer was Elijah.  Jn.1:21 but John didn’t think he was Elijah.  It seems that God mercifully causes amnesia to set in before or by the time children mature.  So a person (like John) isn’t tormented with guilt from any memory of his previous life when he’d committed major crimes or sins.

Elijah was considered a great prophet.  In the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), Moses typified the Law and Elijah typified the Prophets…the “Law and the Prophets”.  And in Lk.7:28, Jesus said there’s no greater prophet than John/(Elijah)!  Mt.17:3-4, 10-13 in the Transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared with Jesus.  The representatives of the Law and the Prophets were two witnesses to Messiah Jesus’ upcoming death (Lk.9:30-31).  Note that the Transfiguration occurred after John the Baptizer was beheaded (back in Mt.14:10).  Elijah couldn’t have been present in the Transfiguration if John was still alive in Judea.

The commission given to John the Baptizer as “My messenger” (Mal.3:1, Is.40:3 & Mk.1:2-4) came to pass in the 1st century AD, although unconverted Jews still don’t think John was the prophesied Elijah.

Rebirth to physical life was a common belief in Bible times.  Elijah was expected to personally appear on the scene.  Philo Judaeus (ca 20 BC – 50 AD) wrote of the Lógos (Greek), the Word of God.  Works of Philo: The Special Laws 1, p.541 “Now the image of God is the Logos [Word], by which all the world was made.”  The apostle John affirmed in Jn.1:1-4, 14, all things came into being through the primordial Logos/Word who became Jesus in the flesh.  Philo preceded the apostle John.

Philo also wrote in On Dreams 1:138-139, “Now of souls some descend upon the earth with a view to be bound in mortal bodies. Of these, those which are influenced by a desire for mortal life, and familiarized to it, again return to it.”  According to Philo, some Jews returned to a physical life and others didn’t.  (This wasn’t the false New Age belief of transmigration of souls into lower animal bodies!)

Josephus Antiquities of the Jews 18:1:3-5Pharisees believe souls have an immortal rigor, and under the earth [cf. Paul’s Php.2:10] there will be rewards or punishments. Virtuous souls have the power to revive and live again, the vicious to be detained….The doctrine of the Sadducees is that souls die with the body…The Essenes teach immortality of souls and esteem that the rewards of righteousness are to be earnestly striven for.”  Pharisees & Essenes thought there was life after death.  Paul had been a Pharisee.

Roman author Pliny (23–79 AD) wrote admirably of the Essenes.  Biblical Archaeology Review Spring 2020, p.49 quotes Pliny. “So fruitful for them [Essenes] is the repentance which others feel for their past lives. Natural History 5:17:4.

Jews who encountered Jesus thought He too had lived previously.  Some mistakenly thought Jesus was the expected Elijah to come, or that Jesus was John the Baptizer reincarnated.  Mk.6:14-16 “People were saying, ‘John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are at work in Him [Jesus].’ But others were saying, ‘He is Elijah.’ When Herod heard of it, he kept saying, ‘John, who I beheaded, has risen!”  Evidently Herod didn’t hold to the Sadducean doctrine of no resurrection.

Others thought Jesus was an Old Testament prophet (other than Elijah) returned to life.  Jesus asked His disciples in Mt.16:13-14, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ They answered Him, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the Prophets.”  Some of Jesus’ countrymen thought He was Jeremiah (lived ca 650–570 BC) physically alive again.  Why Jeremiah?  Jeremiah had prophesied of the future Messiah (Je.23:5-6) and New Covenant (Je.31:31-ff).  Both Jeremiah and Jesus were persecuted by Jewish leaders who opposed them (cf. Je.20:7-10).  JFB Commentary Mt.16:14 “Jeremiah…suggested by a supposed resemblance between the ‘man of sorrows’ [Is.53:3 Messiah] and the ‘weeping prophet’ [Je.9:1, 13:17]?”  Jeremiah’s book of “Lamentations” means “weeping”.  So it is perhaps understandable why some would (wrongly) think Jesus & Jeremiah were the same human spirit.

Jn.9:1-3 Jesus’ disciples asked Jesus about the man born blind from birth.  “His disciples asked Him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents that he should be born blind?’ Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents, but in order that the works of God might be displayed in him.”  Jesus then displayed the works of God by miraculously giving sight to this man.

We understand, a human embryo or fetus in the womb doesn’t commit sin.  Jesus’ disciples assumed the man sinned in a past life and his blindness in this life was the payback; he was reaping what he’d sowed.  Or else the man’s blindness was caused by some sin committed by his parents.  Jn.9:34 Pharisees who opposed Jesus accused this man of being “born entirely in sin”.  Although sin wasn’t the cause with this man, Jesus didn’t tell His disciples that a person couldn’t have sinned in a prior physical body.

Gill Exposition Jn.9:2 “The disciples asked whether this man had sinned in a pre-existent state when in another body. This notion, Josephus says, was embraced by the Pharisees.”  Barnes Notes “Many of the Jews believed…that the soul of a man, in consequence of sin, might be compelled into other bodies, and be punished there.”  The nature of the past life sins may not be capital crimes or wholly evil.  Ellicott Commentary ties Jn.9:2 to the apocrypha book Wisdom of Solomon 8:20. “Being rather good, I came into a body undefiled” (KJV 1611 edition).  He’d been more good than evil; his rebirth body had no congenital defects.  (In Mt.12:42, Jesus referred to the “wisdom of Solomon” 6:1.)  Jesus didn’t tell His disciples that belief in a rebirth from a mother’s womb (as Job believed, Jb.1:21) was erroneous.

Jn.5:28-29 Jesus said that from the graves there is resurrection to eternal Life (Strongs g2222, Greek) for those who did good, and resurrection to judgment for those who didn’t.  Judgment involves evaluation.  Ac.24:15 Paul said there shall be “a resurrection of both the just and the unjust”.  Cambridge Bible Jn.5:29 “This passage and Ac.24:15 are the only direct assertions in the New Testament of a bodily resurrection of the wicked.”  (also cf. Da.12:2 with Je.23:40.)

He.11:35 a resurrection to eternal Life with a spiritual body is better than resuscitation, and better than resurrection to another physical life.  1Co.15:44 that which is planted a natural physical body is raised a spiritual body.  Paul is referring to the just who believed, repented, and lived by the Holy Spirit.  (see “Life and Death – for Saints”.)  The just were “firstfruits” (Ja.1:18, Re.14:4), rising to eternal Life.  The just who sowed good works reap a spiritual body to be with the Lord.

He.9:27 all die at least once physically.  cf. deaths: He.11:35, Jn.11:44, 1Ki.17:22, 2Ki.4:35.  Re.20:14 a second death which terminates consciousness is indicated for the very few.  (see “Gehenna (2) – Lake of Unquenched Fire”.)  Yet based upon God’s principle of justice seen in De.19:21, “life for life”…there wouldn’t be a second death without a second life preceding it!  To hear the name Jesus, believe, repent.

Alfred Edersheim The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, p.1064 “It is at least conceivable that there may be a purification or transformation of all who are capable of such…and that in the end of what we call time, only that which is morally incapable of transformation, be it men or devils, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.”  (Also, some few view the lake of fire as a refiner’s fire of purification.)

So what do the scriptures reflect will be the final result when every human, BC and AD, has had ample opportunity to hear of salvation via Jesussacrifice, and time to show belief and repentance from sin?

Re.5:11-14 “And every [g3956] created thing – which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, in the sea, and all [g3956] that are in them – I heard saying ‘To the One who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb [Jesus], be blessing and honor and glory and dominion to the ages of the ages. Amen.”  Ellicott Commentary Re.5:13 “The whole universe joins in this grand acclaim.”  Barnes Notes “Ascribing praise. All worlds seem to join in it.”  JFB Commentary “The universal chorus of creation.”  Every creature.

So this is total.  At this time all will worship, giving honor and praise to the Lord.  This is done of their own free will.  2Ti.1:10 Jesus has “abolished death”!  There are none left in a hell agony, resisting God!

John envisioned in Re.21:1, 4 “I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist. He [God] shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death will not exist any more; or mourning or crying or pain; for the former things have ceased to exist.”  There’s no cries of pain & torment from a hell-fire!  Gill Exposition Re.21:4 “There will be nothing to afflict the mind.”

What great news this is in regards to our ancestors, family members, friends & loved ones who died unconverted/unsaved!  Their ultimate fate isn’t eternal conscious torment in hell!  The same goes for “all Israel” (not just a remnant).  And for the unnamed multitudes who lived in BC times.  God is so good!

Needless to say, Christians should hope that Universal Salvation for all through Jesus will eventually be a reality in the ages to come.  God’s loving, impartial plan for mankind, created in His image, is greater than we’ve thought!  Praise the Lord!

Rebirth to Physical Life (1)

This topic is follow-up to the two-part topic “Universal Christian Salvation”.  As background, I suggest you read/review the Bible verses referenced in “Universal Christian Salvation” before proceeding here.

In “Universal Christian Salvation”, we examined pertinent passages in the New Testament (NT) and the Old Testament Septúagint/LXX which contain the Greek term for “all”…“pas” (Strongs g3956).  This term “pas” occurs 1,240 times in the NT.  In several of those verses, all/pas pertained to all of mankind.

Universalism or Universal Christian Salvation/Reconciliation is the belief that all or most humans will ultimately be reconciled to God, saved through Jesus.  (It isn’t pluralism; since not all mans’ religions are from God.)  Two disparate beliefs of Christians are…Eternal Conscious Torment in hell-fire, held by Calvinists & Arminianists…and Annihilationism extinction.  see “Universal Christian Salvation (1)”.

A person may cite isolated Bible verses which seem to support any or all of the above three beliefs!

Yet God is love (1Jn.4:16).  Universal Christian Salvation/Reconciliation does comprehensively reflect God’s love.  God is also fair, impartial.  Ro.2:11 “There is no partiality with God.”  He’s no respecter of persons (Ac.10:34).  And God is just.  Ro.9:14 “There is no injustice with God.”  Is.61:8 the Lord loves justice.  1Jn.1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.”

But if all humans end up ‘saved’, how does such Universal Salvation also reflect God’s character as just & consistent, with the requirements for His forgiveness and mans’ salvation the same for every person?

Over the millennia, most of humanity died without believing in the name of Jesus, the only name by which we’re saved (Ac.4:12).  Many or most never even heard His name!  e.g. the multitudes of gentiles who lived in BC times, before Jesus’ incarnation.  All men are sinners (Ro.3:23).  Some die cursing God.

Yet Paul wrote in Php.2:10-11, “At the name of Jesus everyone [pas g3956] in heaven, on earth, and in the world below will bow the knee. And every [g3956] tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”  That’s universality…even including those “under the earth” (KJV)!  also cf. 1Pe.3:19Geneva Bible Php.2:10 “All creatures will at length be subject to Christ.”  Meyer NT Commentary Php.2:10 “The bowing of the knee represents adoration.”  Cambridge Bible Php.2:10 “Created existence, in its heights and depths…being said to worship.”  Ellicott Commentary Php.2:11 “The acknowledgement of universal Lordship and majesty.”

However, many didn’t believe and repent, two requirements for salvation (Mk.16:16; Jn.3:18, 36; Lk.13:3; Ac.2:38, 16:31).  If they’re saved without belief and repenting from sin, it would seem that God has a double standard!  Yet God is just and impartial.  Mankind reaps what he sows (Ga.6:7).  How may this be reconciled?  Jesus and Paul said there were other “ages to come” (e.g. Mt.12:32, Ep.2:7).

Ge.18:20 the sin in the ancient cities of Sodom & Gomorrah was “exceedingly grave”.  Consequently, the Lord destroyed their inhabitants with fire from heaven (Ge.19:24-25, Jude 1:7)!  Therefore, we may think it would be intolerable for them in the judgment.  Condemnation.  But that’s not what Jesus said (speaking to the unrepentant who opposed Him).  Mt.11:24 “It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.”  What?!  also Mt.10:15.  Having destroyed those wicked cities with fire, for their judgment to be “more tolerable”…implied is a measure of future forgiveness.

The Lord asserted in Ezk.16:53-55, “I will restore the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria [Israel’s 10 tribes] and her daughters….Sodom with her daughters will return to their former state.”  The Jordan River plain.  Keil and Delitzsch Ezk.16:53 “What the apostle teaches [1Pe.3:19, 4:6]…is equally applicable to the Sodomites…and indeed generally to all the heathen nations who either lived before Christ or departed from this earthly life without having heard the gospel preached.”  So it’s not hopeless for those ancient Sodomites!  They would eventually be restored.  Such tolerance could also include the children of those utterly corrupt heathen nations/Canaanites who Christ commanded Israel to exterminate in De.20:16 & Jsh.6:20-21?  Those ancients may still obtain salvation!

But those individuals all died.  How can they return to their former lands and hear the saving gospel?  Furthermore, reanimation doesn’t apply only to those gentiles; it applies to the entire house of Israel too!     

The dry bones passage of Ezk.37:1-14 reflects the whole house of Israel rebirthed to physical life!  (It’s too long to quote here in full.)  Their corpses (slain, v.9) had decomposed.  v.4-5 NET “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord, I Am about to infuse breath into you and you will live.”  Barnes Notes Ezk.37:6 “In Ezk.37:5, not ‘I will cause’, but I cause or am causing.”  It was about to start happening.  v.6 “I will put sinews on you, make flesh grow back on you, cover you with skin and put breath in you…and you will know that I Am the Lord.”  (cf. Job said in Jb.10:11, “Did you not…cloth me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews?”)  These are literal breathing physical bodies with human spirits!  Cambridge Bible Ezk.37:6 “Their becoming actual men of flesh & blood.”  At death their human spirit had returned to God who gave it (Ec.12:7).  God sends those same spirits into new flesh bodies.

Ezk.37:11-13 “These bones are the whole house of Israel. I will open your graves and bring you back to the land of Israel.”  This pertains to all Israel.  They’ll all return to the land of Israel.  Similarly, the Lord said ancient Sodom’s inhabitants would return to their land area.  Ezk.37 is a fleshly rebirth of all Israelites.  v.14 “I will put My Spirit in you.”  God’s Holy Spirit (HS) too is given to them.  God will call them to Himself, they’ll be taught the gospel (Jn.6:44-45) and receive the HS to walk in His ways.

Paul said in Ro.11:26, “All Israel shall be saved”.  (also cf. Is.45:17, Zec.8:13.)  Not just a remnant!  Not just the 100th generation, but excluding most of the previous 99 generations (with those who went into Assyrian & Babylonian captivities) who burn forever in hell-fire!  No.  God puts His Spirit in the historical house of Israel!  All will have the opportunity to repent & believe, and be saved through King Jesus (Ezk.37:24).  God loves all who live, both BC and AD.  His will is none perish forever; that all come to repentance, 2Pe.3:9.

Hosea prophesied to the northern 10 tribes of Israel around 750 BC.  Ho.13:12-14 “The iniquity of Ephráim [the northern kingdom] is on record…I will deliver them out of the power of Hades, and will redeem them from death. O Hades, where is thy sting?”  (Paul quotes this LXX verse in 1Co.15:55.)  But when?  First…Ho.13:15-16 in 722 BC Shalmanéser V will attack from the East, since the guilty northern Israel (capital at Samaria) has rebelled against God.  Israel will be deported by Assyria into captivity.  Those Israelites will die in the attack and in captivity.  Then later…Ho.14:4-5 “I will heal their apostasy, I will love them freely, for My anger is turned away from them. I will be like the dew to Israel.”  v.8 “O Ephraim…it is I who answer and look after you.”  The Lord will care for them.

But those had all died!  Yet the Lord will bring back those apostate Israelites from Hades (the realm of the dead); the sting of death is past.  MacLaren Expositions Ho.14:5 “That promise in its depth and fullness is applicable only to Christian Israel.”  That deported generation of northern Israel will have opportunity for salvation.  Again, “All Israel shall be saved”.  Sanh 10:1All Israelites will have a share in the world to come.”  Including the hardened, Ro.11:15, 25.  But those individuals will have to live a right life…believe, and repent (of apostasy).  God’s standards are consistent; He is impartial (Ep.6:9).

Later the Jews of Jerusalem and the southern kingdom of Judah were killed or sent by God into captivity to Babylon (between 606-586 BC).  Lam.2:21-22 they were slaughtered!  La.1:5 God’s wrath was due to the multitude of their transgressions.  La.3:42-43 the Lord didn’t pardon them then.  La.4:6 “The iniquity of Thy people is greater than the sin of Sodom.”  Adult survivors died in captivity.

Yet Je.32:36-40, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel concerning this city [Jerusalem], ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, famine, and pestilence. Behold I will gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My wrath, and I will bring them back to this place and make them dwell in peace and safety…And I will make an everlasting covenant with them.” (cf. Ezk.37:13-14, 24).

But they’d died (elsewhere)!  JFB Commentary Je.32:37 “The ‘all’ countries implies a future restoration more universal than that from Babylon.”  Not just after the 70 years of Je.29:10.  That generation was killed in the siege, and over the decades the adult survivors from 597 BC had died in captivity.  Barnes Notes Je.32:39 “Under the new covenant they will walk with one consent in the one narrow path of right-doing.”  Ellicott Commentary Je.32:40 “The ‘new covenant”…which shall abide forever.”  Gill Exposition Je.32:40 “An everlasting covenant…which is known and made manifest at conversion.”  Cambridge Bible Je.32:40 “It is the ‘new covenant’ of Jer.31:31, etc., which is meant.”  Jesus said in Lk.22:20, “This is the new covenant in My blood”.  Yet those Jews had perished 600 years before the inauguration of the New Covenant in the 1st century AD at Jesus’ Last Supper!

The southern kingdom of Judah, long since dead, would be restored to their land too.  Paul wrote in Ro.11:15, “What will their [the Jews] acceptance be but life from the dead”.  v.23 God is able to graft them in again.  Ro.14:9 Christ is Lord of both the dead and the living. (cf. Ezk.37:12.)  It’s not all over for those Jews who perished in the first half of the 6th century BC!  They’re part of “all Israel”.

Alfred Edersheim The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, p.116 “In view of Isa.53 and other passages…the Messiah is represented as willingly taking upon Himself all these sufferings, on condition that all Israel – the living, the dead, and those yet unborn – should be saved.”

1Sm.2:6 “The Lord kills, and makes alive; He brings down to Sheól and raises up.”  also see De.32:39.  God, the author of life, has the right to end a life.  He may kill the wicked.  The Lord sent Israel/Judah to die in captivity.  Men reap what they sow (2Co.9:6).  But the order in the above two verses isn’t ‘He makes alive and then kills’, later…it’s vice versa.  After God kills, He then makes them alive again.

God allowed the patriarch Job to suddenly lose his wealth, children, and health in his trials.  Job was suffering, thinking God was angry over his (unknown) sin.  Jb.14:13 Job lamented, “If only you would hide me in Sheol until Your anger passes”.  He wanted to go to the realm of the dead (temporarily).  Though Job didn’t understand why this evil had come upon him, He didn’t blame God.  Instead, Job said in Jb.19:26 KJV, “Though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh I shall see God”.  Job didn’t doubt God existed.  Cambridge Bible Jb.19:26 “Before death he shall not see Him.”  Then when?

Jb.1:21 Tanakh KJV LXX, “Naked came I forth from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there.”  What?!  Job said he would later be reborn from a mother’s womb; his same spirit indwelling a human newborn!  After death, the Lord would make him alive again (1Sm.2:6).  cf. Is.26:19 “Your dead will live; their corpses will rise. You who lie in the dust. The earth will give birth to the departed spirits.”  Ellicott Commentary Is.26:19 “Like the vision of dry bones in Ezek.37:1-14.”  Physical rebirth.

Job said in Jb.29:18 Tanakh, “I shall die with my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the phoenix.”  Barnes Notes Jb.29:18 “Herder observes that the phoenix is obviously intended here…The rabbis generally understand here the Phoenix; a fabulous bird, much celebrated in ancient times…Jannai adds that ‘This bird lives 1,000 years, and in the end of the thousand years, a fire goes forth from its nest, and burns it up. But there remains an egg, from which again the members grow, and it rises to life.”

Job thought he too would experience another physical life, as the ancient phoenix bird.  Clément was a fellow-worker with Paul (Php.4:3).  1Clem.12:2-6 describes a 500-year life cycle of the very rare phoenix.  v.6 “The Lord…even by a bird shows us the greatness of His power to fulfil His promise.”  (A phoenix was exhibited in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius, 41–54 AD).  Tacitus Annals 6:28 (117 AD) “There is no question that the bird is occasionally seen in Egypt.”  The phoenix symbolized rebirth.  We understand that Job’s physical life did end well (Jb.42:10).  But that’s not the case for every human.

Re.20:5 “The rest of the dead lived not again until the 1,000 years were completed.”  Interestingly, an ancient Greek & Roman belief was…the spirits of the dead dwelt in Hades for 1,000 years, and then were resurrected or reincarnated to earthly life.  [Note – ref for Hades: Lk.16:23; 1Co.15:55; Re.1:18, 20:13-14.  also see the topic “Thousand (Years)’ in the Bible – (2)”.]

Re.20:8 at that time, after the 1,000 years, there are “nations in the four corners of the earth”.  Physical nations!  cf. Ec.6:6 “Though a man live 1,000 years twice told….”  May this include the men of Sodom and ancient Israelites/Jews reborn to another physical life (Ezk.16:55; Mt.11:24, 10:15)?

The Jewish apocryphal book Wisdom of Sírach, called Ecclesiásticus, was written ca 180 BC.  Its writer Yeshúa ben Síra alluded to a rebirth to physical life, for the righteous.  WisSir.46:11-12 “Whoever did not turn away from the Lord – May their memory be blessed, may their bones revive from their place, and may the name of those honored live again in their sons.”  This brings to mind the “dry bones” of Ezk.37.  Also WisSir.49:10 “May He indeed revive the bones of the twelve prophets from their place.”

The Jewish book of 2Maccabees was written ca 125 BC.  Its writer too believed in rebirth to physical life.  2Mac.12:44-46 KJV 1611 edition “If he had not hoped that the slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead. Whereupon he made reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.”  Wikipedia: Resurrection “The concept of resurrection of the physical body is found in 2 Maccabees, according to which it will happen through re-creation of the flesh.”  (also ref 2Mac.7:22-23, 28-29; Ezk.37.)  It was their custom to pray for the deceased.

Paul wrote in 1Co.15:29 Good News trans, “What about those people who are baptized for the dead? What do they hope to accomplish? If it is true, as some claim, that the dead are not raised to life, why are those people being baptized for the dead?”  In the 1st century, it seems it was a custom to not only pray for the dead but to also be baptized by proxy for the dead.  Several interpretations have been offered for 1Co.15:29.  Expositor’s Greek Testament 1Co.15:29 “How futile Christian devotion must be, such as is ‘in those baptized for the dead’, if death ends all.”  Pulpit Commentary “Why do some of you get baptized on behalf of your dead friends?”  Cambridge Bible “The natural and obvious explanation is that the apostle [Paul] was here referring to a practice, prevalent in his day, of persons permitting themselves to be baptized on behalf of their dead relatives and friends.”  Perhaps prayers and vicarious baptism was efficacious for their comrades and loved ones who would later have a physical rebirth.

Where else in scripture do we read about belief in physical rebirth (besides Jb.1:21)?  As well, a rebirth could be great opportunity for our ancestors, children, family members, friends & loved ones who died unconverted/unsaved!  Their ultimate fate wouldn’t be eternal conscious torment in hell-fire!

{Sidelight: For our non-religious relatives/ancestors who’d lived a peaceful quiet life to suffer hell-fire forever equally with genocidal tyrants…such injustice wouldn’t reflect just retribution!  God is just.  The punishment fits the crime; the lex talionis principle of equality (e.g. Le.24:17-22).}

Gehenna (2) – Lake of Fire

This topic was begun in “Gehenna (1) – Valley of Unquenched Fire”.  Part 2 here is the continuation and conclusion.  Part 1 should be read first; most of the material in (1) won’t be repeated here in (2).

Gehenna was a location, a historical place.  It’s a proper noun.  As such, it is better left untranslated, rendered as “Géhenna” (transliterated from the Greek Gé-en-na).  Gehenna isn’t a common noun.

Historians have located the steep Gehenna valley/ravine below the SW wall of ancient Jerusalem.  It was in the territory allotted to the tribe of Judah (ref Jsh.15:8), and converges with the Kidrón valley.

The term Gehenna came from the Old Testament (OT) valley of the son of Hinnóm, which occurs 13 times in the OT.  The 13 OT occurrences of Hinnom (Strongs h2011, Hebrew noun) are: Jsh.15:8 (2), 18:16 (2); 2Ki.23:10; 2Ch.28:3, 33:6; Ne.11:30; Je.7:31-32, 19:2, 6, 32:35 (39:35 Septúagint/LXX).  Hinnom means lamentation.  Hinnom is Ennom in the OT Greek LXX.

Cambridge Bible Lk.12:5 “The Valley of Hinnom…was a pleasant valley outside Jerusalem, which had first been rendered infamous by Molech worship, then defiled by Josiah with corpses; and lastly kept from putrefaction by large fires to consume the corpses and prevent pestilence.”  This valley also became a prophesied place of slaughter, filled with human corpses.  (see Part 1 for particulars.)

Traditionally, the ravine later became a place of refuseBarnes Notes Mt.5:22 “It was necessary to keep fires continually burning there. The extreme loathsomeness of the place, the filth and putrefaction, and the lurid fires burning by day and night, made it one of the most appalling and terrific objects with which a Jew was acquainted.”  Jews knew.  Gehenna also became interpreted as imagery…for “hell”.

There are 12 New Testament (NT) occurrences of the term Gehenna (Strongs g1067, Greek): Mt.5:22, 29-30, 10:28, 18:9, 23:15, 33; Mk.9:43-47; Lk.12:5; Ja.3:6.  Eleven occurrences are the words of Jesus found in the gospel accounts (mostly in Matthew).  The sole exception is Ja.3:6 (figurative).

The term Gehenna doesn’t appear in the book of Acts, nor in any of Paul’s letters, nor in other epistles (only once in James)!  That may seem like a strange omission?!  But Gehenna was traditionally the Jerusalem dump.  It wouldn’t have the same significance in the foreign cities of the NT epistles.

What about “hell”?  In several of our Bible translations, there are four original language terms commonly rendered as “hell”…Sheol (h7585), Hádes (g86), Tartaróo (g5020), Gehenna (g1067).  All four are places or realms.  All four are proper nouns (according to Oxford Dictionary), not common nouns.  Proper nouns are better left untranslated in English.  e.g. in Young’s Literal Translation (YLT) they’re untranslated.  “Hell” is too general a word to use for specific terms.  The above four are specific terms.  Steve Gregg All You Want To Know About Hell, p.86 “The English word ‘hell’ isn’t a translation, but an interpretation.”

Sheol is the Hebrew OT term for the place of the dead.  The root meaning of sheol is ‘unseen’.  Sheol corresponds to Hades in the Greek LXX and NT.  YLT leaves the term Hades untranslated.  YLT doesn’t use the word “hell”.  Again, both Sheol and Hades are better left untranslated.

The KJV OT often rendered Sheol ashell” when conveying the fate of those who were bad or wicked!  ref KJV: Ps.9:17; Pr.5:5, 7:27, 9:18; Is.5:14, 14:9; Ezk.31:16-18, 32:27.  (In the OT, death and the realm of Sheol may be the result of God’s judgment.)  Yet the KJV often rendered Sheol as thegrave” when portraying the fate of those good or righteous!  ref KJV: Ge.37:35 (Jacob); Jb.14:13 & 17:13 (Job); Ps.88:3; SS.8:6 (ironically); Is.38:10 (Hezekiah).  Also cf. KJV Ho.13:14 with KJV 1Co.15:55.

In so doing, the KJV is biased.  There is a Hebrew OT term which means grave, h6913 qéhber, noun.  It occurs 67 times in the OT (also translated as sepulcher, burying-place.)  e.g. Ex.14:11; 1Ch.34:28; Jb.5:26; Nah.1:14.  It ties to bury h6912 qabár, verb.  Also, a less used OT term for grave is h6900 qeburáh, noun, occurring 14 times (e.g. Ge.35:20; Ezk.32:23.)  But Sheol/Hades was an unseen realm…not a grave.

Tartaroo was a holding place for angels who’d sinned.  2Pe.2:4 “God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into tartaroo [g5020] and committed them to pits of darkness [g2217] reserved for judgment.”  also ref Jude 1:6; 1Enoch 20:2 with 1Enoch 21:9-10.

However, the concept of endless torment was unknown in the OT scriptures.  (see Part 1 regarding mortal worms in Is.66:24.)

The 1995 Church of England Doctrine Commission said, “Hell is not eternal torment”.  Bible scholar F.F. Bruce wrote, “Eternal conscious torment is incompatible with the revealed character of God”.

Torment forever in hell-fire doesn’t fit with Christ’s OT retributive justice or lex talionis principle.  Rather, Christ’s capital punishment penalty was death.  Ex.21:23-24 life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, etc.  And Paul wrote in Ro.6:23, “The wages of sin is death”.  Not eternal life in hell-fire!

Later it was the Roman Catholic theologian Augustine (354–430 AD) of Hippo, Algeria who promoted the idea of eternal torment in hell-fire.

Jesus’ NT warnings (regarding Gehenna) were tied to national judgment upon Jerusalem/Judea, with corpses strewn in the valleys.  Even via “unquenched fire”.  (see Part 1.)

God Himself is figuratively depicted as fire!  Moses told ancient Israel in De.4:24, “The Lord your God is a consuming fire”.

A coal of fire purified the lips of the prophet Isaiah in vision, Is.6:6-7Cambridge Bible Is.6:6 “Fire is both a symbol of holiness and an agent of purification.”  Fire (and blood) purges and atones for sin & iniquity.  Gill Exposition Is.6:7 “Thy [Isaiah’s] sin purged, or ‘atoned for’ or ‘covered.”

And there are verses in the OT which allude to a Sheol fire in the afterlife.

The Lord said in the song of Moses, De.32:22 “A fire is kindled in My anger, and it burns to the lowest part of Sheol [LXX Hades g86]; and consumes the earth with its produce and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains”.  Perhaps this was the origin of volcanos?  Fire was in the lowest part of Sheol/Hades.  cf. Song Sol.8:6 “For love is as strong as death, jealousy is as unrelenting as Sheol [LXX Hades g86]. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the Lord.”  Sheol/Hades was tied to fire.

In Lk.16:19-ff, Jesus told the parable of the rich man who’d failed to be a good steward of his wealth.  Lk.16:23-24 “In Hades [g86]….he cried out and said…I am in agony in this flame.”  There was a flame in that sector of Hades/Sheol; the realm of departed spirits beneath the earth’s surface.

Was the Gehenna valley also symbolic for the lowest part of Sheol/Hades?  Over the centuries, Gehenna became the figurative place of spiritual purification for wicked Jews.  The rabbis considered Gehenna a purgatory or a punishment where the wicked suffer until he’s atoned for his sins.

Jewish Encyclopedia: Gehenna “They are cast into Gehenna to a depth commensurate with their sinfulness.”  Jesus’ words in Mt.13:42, 50 “Cast them into the furnace of fire; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth”.  However, this happened to Jerusalem in 70 AD, prophesied in Ezk.22:17-22.

Jesus also spoke of those cast out into outer darkness in three NT verses, all in Matthew: 8:12 (cf. Mt.13:38 “sons of the kingdom”), 22:13, 25:30.  Jude 1:13 refers to “blackest darkness”.  It may be a location or a state of being/mind.  It’s a place of “weeping and gnashing of teeth”, of anguish and despair.  1Jn.1:6 wrote of those who “walk in darkness”.  2Pe.2:17 refers to a “mist of darkness”.  To contrast, 1Pe.2:9 exhorts, “You should show forth the praises of Him [God] who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

cf. Mt.13:42, 50 with Jesus’ words in Mk.9:49. “Everyone will be salted with fire.”  Salt and fire both purify.  Pulpit Commentary Mk.9:49 “There’s a fire which is penal, and a fire which purifies.”  Mt.25:41-46 chastisement for not aiding the needy.  (Eternal torment seems overly severe for failing to do this!)  v.46 Dr. Spiros ZódiatesKólasis conveys the notion of punishment for correction and betterment.”

Josephus Antiquities of the Jews 18:1:3 “Pharisees…believe souls have an immortal vigor, and under the earth there will be rewards or punishments…The vicious to be detained in that prison, virtuous souls to revive and live again.”  The apostle Paul also referred to those “under the earth” (Php.2:10).

Traditionally, the aftermath of spiritual purification in lower Sheol was…the person ascends to the world to come (Ólam Hába/Gan Eden), or else undergoes destructionJudaism 101: The Afterlife “The very righteous go directly to Gan Eden. The average person’s time in Gehinnom doesn’t exceed 12 months.”

Also, some have interpreted or compared Gehenna to/as the “lake of fire”!  Jewish folklore indicates the accursed Gehenna valley had a gate which led to a lake of fire.  (Views differ as to the gate’s location.)

Wikipedia: Lake of Fire “Such a lake also appears in Plato’s Phaedo, explicitly identified with Tartarus, where the souls of the wicked are tormented until it is time for them to be reborn, and where some souls are left forever.”

The book of Revelation is full of hyperbole & symbolism; and contains more variant readings from the Majority Text than do all the other NT books combined!  If our translation of Revelation is accurate…its lake of fire (at the bottom of or beneath Gehenna?) is seemingly the hell-fire of the afterlife.

Lake of fire” occurs only in Re.19:20, 20:10, 14-15, 21:8.  The beast, the false prophet, the devil, death, Hades, and those not written in the book of life (ref the list in 21:8)…are cast into the lake of fire.  Re.19:20 “The lake of fire which burns with brimstone [g2303].”  Brimstone is sulfur.  Sulfur can purify.  Sciencing: Ancient Uses of Sulfur “Roman purifying rituals included fumigating a building or personal belongings with the smoke from burning sulfur.”

Does the lake of fire torment, consume, or purify?

Re.2:11, 20:6, 14, 21:8 speak of a “second death”.  Re.20:13-15 “Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”  Ellicott Commentary Re.20:14 “It is clearly figurative language, implying that Death, the last enemy is destroyed, together with Hades, who was personified as Death’s escort (Re.6:8). The lake of fire into which Death is thrown is the second death!…Very awful is that spiritual death.”

Also Expositor’s Greek Testament “Hades…naturally ceases to have any function.”

John wrote in Re.21:4, “There will be no more death”.  Death will die, in other words.  Paul in 1Co.15:26, “The last enemy to be abolished is death”.  He indicated in 1Co.15:55, there will be no more sting of death.  2Ti.1:10 “Our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death.”  Christ rendered death inoperative.

Some think the “lake of fire” means the second death for the incorrigibly wicked.  The concept of the “second death” also appears in the early AD Jewish Targums (Aramaic OT paraphrases).

Targum Is.65:6 “Their punishment shall be in Gehenna where the fire burns all day…deliver their bodies to the second death.”

Targum Is.22:14 “This sin will not be forgiven you, until you die the second death.”  Targum Is.65:15 “The Lord God will slay you with the second death.”

Yet based upon God’s principle of justice seen in De.19:21, “life for life”…there wouldn’t be a second death without a second life preceding it!

The Targum Neofití and fragments indicate the second death is the death the wicked die.  Targum Je.51:39 “They shall die the second death and not live in the world to come [in Olam Haba].”

These Targum paraphrases may relate to a final destruction of any remaining wicked.  More like an annihilation, an extinction…not everlasting torment through eternal life in hell-fire.

But is the second death a final separation from God…or was a spiritual purification meant?

The visions and near death experiences (NDE) many people have had of “hell”…are they true and valid?  Is what they claim to see everlasting or temporary?

It’s hard to imagine ruthless leaders such as Genghis Kahn, Bloody Mary, Idi Amin…and Adolph Hitler together with the numerous disbelieving Jews killed during WW2… all being tormented together (with those Jews) eternally in fire!

Also the untold millions of gentiles worldwide who lived prior to Jesus and didn’t know God or ancient Israel…are they doomed forever?  Is this reflective of a God of love (1Jn.4:8)!?  Or…why visit or help (unsaved) widows and orphans now, if God intends to annihilate most of them anyway?

Interestingly, the futuristic prophecy of Je.31:38-40 indicates that…Gehenna will be holy!  Je.31:40 “The whole valley [Hinnom/Gehenna] of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the brook Kidron…shall be holy to the Lord; it shall not be plucked up or overthrown anymore forever.”  Cambridge Bible Je.31:40 “The valley of Hinnom, into which carcasses of criminals and of animals were cast.”

Today, it is a Jerusalem suburb with concerts and even fireworks nearby!  Israel’s Ministry of Tourism wants you to visit “hell” (Gehenna), so to speak!

The good news for Christians…we won’t be hurt by a second death!  Re.2:11 “He who overcomes shall not be harmed by the second death.”  The saved don’t have to undergo it.

And the valley also became a prophesied place of slaughter filled with human corpses.

Is.30:31-33 prophesied that the army of Assyrian King Sennacheríb under general Rabshakéh (Is.36:2) would camp at Topheth, as a funeral pyre site in the valley.  Is.37:36 there 185,000 of them died!

After Josiah’s death, Judah returned to the heathen practice of human sacrifice in the Hinnom valley/Topheth.  Therefore, Jeremiah prophesied it would become a place of future national judgmentJe.7:30-34 “The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘When it will no more be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter. For the Land will become a ruin.”  The Lord would judge Judah and Jerusalem (v.34) with death & destruction for their detestable sacrifices.

The entire chapter of Je.19 is a prophecy about the valley of ben-Hinnom (son of Hinnom) or Gehenna, in more detail.  The Lord declared in Je.19:7, “Judah and Jerusalem…in this place I shall cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies; and I shall give over their carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth.”  In the valley of ben-Hinnom, the valley of Slaughter (v.6).

Je.21:10 “For I [the Lord] will set My face against this city for harm….It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire.”  King Nebuchadnézzar burned Jerusalem in 586 BC.  This fulfillment is seen in Je.52:12-15.  The residue of the people were exiled to Babylon.

After Jews returned from Babylonian captivity, the last OT chronological reference to the valley of Hinnom is Ne.11:30.  Some returning Jews encamped there.

There are 12 NT occurrences of the term Gehenna g1067.  All but one occurrence is in the words of Jesus found in the gospel accounts (mostly in Matthew).  The sole exception is Ja.3:6 (figurative).

The term Gehenna doesn’t appear in the book of Acts, nor in any of Paul’s letters, nor in other epistles (only once in James)!  That may seem like a strange omission?!  But Gehenna was traditionally the Jerusalem dump.  It wouldn’t have the same significance in the foreign cities of the NT epistles.

John the Baptizer prophesied of unquenched fire in Mt.3:11-12, mixing in figurative language. “He [Jesus] will gather His wheat into the barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”  The Greek for unquenchable fire was  ásbestos pur (g762 g4442).  The wheat and chaff represent people.  John was speaking to residents of Jerusalem/Judea (v.4-5).  In OT language, unquenched fire related to God’s judgment!  This was an analogy known to listeners of John & Jesus in the Holy Land.  Following are verses about unquenched fire from the OT:

Is.34:5, 9-10 “Judgment upon Edom, a people that I [the Lord] have devoted to destruction….Its land shall become burning pitch. It shall not be quenched, night or day. Its smoke shall go up forever.”  Unquenched fire was part of God’s judgment upon the land of Edom in 583 BC.  (It wasn’t ever-burning hell-fire torment!)  Pulpit Commentary Is.34:10 “There was a literal fulfillment of the prophecies against Edom….”

Amos prophesied to Israel with warnings ca 750 BC.  Am.5:6 KJV “Seek the Lord that you may live, lest He break forth like a fire in the house of Joseph [the northern kingdom of Israel, v.1], and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethél.”  Unquenched fire in Israel.  Benson Commentary Am.5:6 “All your idols in Bethel shall not be able to quench it…or save them from God’s judgments.”

Ezk.20:47-48 “Say to the forest of the Négev: Thus says the Lord God, ‘Behold, I Am going to kindle a fire in you…the blazing flame shall not be quenched, and the whole surface from north to south will be burned by it. All flesh shall see…it shall not be quenched.”  Unquenched fire in the Negev, a large arid region in southern Judah.  Matthew Poole Commentary Ezk.20:47 “The Chaldean forces…it will be a raging and swift fire. All means that can be used will not avail to quench this fire, till it has burnt up all.”  Judeans remaining alive were taken captive to Chaldea/Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar.

Je.7:17, 20 “Do you see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem? Thus says the Lord God, ‘My anger and wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and beast…it will burn and not be quenched.  (also ref v.32, quoted previously.)  Je.17:27b “I [the Lord] shall kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem and not be quenched.”  Unquenched fire.  This was the background for Jesus’ warnings for Judah & Jerusalem in the book of Matthew!

Isaiah also prophesied of fire unquenched.  Is.66:24 “Then they shall gaze upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me [the Lord]. For their worm shall not die and their fire shall not be quenched.”  Human corpses (not spirits) were linked to unquenched fire.  Barnes Notes Is.66:24 “The Hebrew word (tolá) refers to the worms [maggots] which are generated in such corrupting bodies.”  Cambridge Bible “Some place in the vicinity of Jerusalem, no doubt the valley of Hinnom.”  The passage refers to putrefying human carcasses, physical flesh.  And it’s also interpreted as imagery.

Jesus spoke of unquenched fire in the passage of Mk.9:43-48, tying Mk.9:48 to Is.66:24.  (Mk.9:44, 46 aren’t found in the best ancient manuscripts, cf. Mt.18:8-9.)  Mk.9:47-48 YLT “It is better for you one-eyed to enter the reign [kingdom] of God, than having two eyes be cast into the gehenna of the fire, where their worm is not dying and the fire is not being quenched.”  Jesus’ disciples knew the location of the Gehenna ravine by Jerusalem.  Mk.9:43-48 also relates to Je.7:20, 32.

Then in 70 AD, Titus’ Roman army came and starved/burned Jerusalem; there were myriads of corpses in valleys!  Josephus Wars of the Jews 5:7:3-4 “Jews cast them down from the walls into the valleys beneath. Titus saw the valleys full of dead bodies.”  Je.7:32 was fulfilled in both 586 BC and 70 AD.

Later, Eusébius (263–339 AD) Ecclesiastical History 6:41:15 described the martyrdom of Christians in Alexandria, Egypt. “They were carried on camels through the city, scourged, and finally consumed in unquenchable fire [asbestos puri].”  (Everlasting torment in hell-fire wasn’t meant!)  This is the same two Greek terms for “unquenchable fire”, asbestos puri, found in Mt.3:12 (and Lk.3:17).  R. Tennant Shaw Day Thoughts on the New Testament “Christians at Alexandria…were scourged and burned in unquenchable fire. The fire burned until it consumed the victims.”  Fire goes out when all combustible matter is consumed or burned up.

Again, the term Gehenna occurs 12 times in the NT, 11 of which are the words of Jesus.

Jesus told His disciples in Mt.10:28 YLT, “Be not afraid of those killing the body, and are not able to kill [g615] the soul [g5590 psuché], but rather fear Him who is able both soul [g5590] and body to destroy [g622] in gehenna”.  Lk.12:4-5 is a parallel passage.  Robertson’s NT Word Pictures Lk.12:5 “Gehenna, valley of Hinnom…was a place of all kinds of refuse which burned ceaselessly and became a symbol of punishment in the other world.”  Gehenna as imagery.

However, in scripture, both God and humans killed souls (g5590 psuche)!  The soul/life (g5590) is in the blood.  Le.17:11 LXX “The soul/life [g5590] of flesh is its blood.”  (also ref Ge.9:4, De.12:23.)   The Lord stated in Le.23:30 LXX, “Every soul [g5590] which shall do work on that day [of Atonement], that soul [g5590] shall be destroyed [g622] from among its people”.  The Lord destroyed souls.  Ja.4:12 “There is one Lawgiver who is able to save and to destroy [g622].”  God declared in De.32:39 LXX, “I kill [g615], and I shall make alive”.  The Lord destroys and kills (souls).

A woman said in 2Sm.14:7 LXX, “Give up the one that smote his brother, and we will put him to death for the soul [g5590] of his brother, whom he killed [g615].”  A man (not God) killed this soul!  Also Elijah complained to the Lord in 1Ki.19:10 LXX, “I have been very zealous for the Lord Almighty, for the children of Israel…have killed [g615] Thy prophets with the sword, and I only am left, and they seek my soul [g5590] to take it.”  They wanted to kill Elijah’s soul, residing in his lifeblood.

Mt.2:16 King Herod the Great killed all the male children of Bethlehem in their second year and under.  The child Jesus wasn’t there; He was in Egypt.  Later, an angel instructed Joseph in Egypt in Mt.2:20. “Arise and take the Child [Jesus]…into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s soul [g5590] are dead.”  Herod the Great, who’d wanted to kill the soul of the infant Jesus, had died.

So both the Lord and humans killed souls in the OT.  Matthew too indicated in Mt.2:16-20 that humans can kill souls [g5590].  Therefore it is difficult to interpret Matthew’s account of the Lord’s implication later in Mt.10:28 as…humans are unable to kill souls [g5590]!  It’d be contradictory or inconsistent.

Rather, it seems Jesus was relating the Mt.10:28 “fear Him who is able both soul and body to destroy” to the Is.10:18 (ESV). “The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the Lord will destroy, both soul and body”.  The expression “both soul and body” indicated a total destruction.  Sennacherib’s army would be wiped out.  (see Is.37:36-37.)  Gill Exposition Is.10:18 “The Assyrian army is compared to a ‘forest’, for the large number of men in it.”  Pulpit Commentary Is.10:18 “Isaiah shows that he is speaking of the Assyrian people, not of the land or its products. Their destruction….”  Steve Gregg All You Want To Know About Hell, p.94 “The destruction of ‘both soul and body’ is elsewhere used as an idiom simply meaning ‘to destroy thoroughly’, without reference to a post-mortem fate. We find this precedent in Isa.10:18.”  It wasn’t a fate of eternal hell-fire conscious torment.

Lk.12:4-5-ff is parallel to Mt.10:28.  Jesus continued in Lk.12:49, “I’ve come to cast fire upon the earth [Land]”.  Again, John the Baptizer also had told the opposing Pharisees & Sadducees in Mt.3:12 that “He [Jesus] will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire”.

Unquenchable fire against nations was OT language known by those Jews; it related to God’s judgment of peoples.  Ellicott Commentary Lk.12:49 “The fire which He [Jesus] came to send is the fire of judgment upon the chaff.”  Peter Pett Lk.12:49 “By these words He [Jesus] is declaring God’s judgment upon the Jewish people…because of their rejection of Him and His message.”  LifeMessenger: Fire on the Earth “The fire that was about to fall on the ‘earth’ (literally land, alluding to Israel as the Promised Land) was the fall of Jerusalem…in 70 AD, a mere 40 years on.”  Titus burned Jerusalem & the temple.

Again, Gehenna fire is also used as imagery.  This topic is continued and concluded in “Gehenna (2) Lake of Fire.”

Day of Atonement (2) – in Revelation

This Part 2 is a continuation of “Day of Atonement (1) Sacrificial Blood”.  This topic’s foundational verses are addressed in Part 1.  Only the initial paragraphs from (1) are repeated here in (2).

In ancient Israel, the weekly 7th day sabbath and the annual Day of Atonement (approximately Oct 1) were the only full sabbath days.  The Day of Atonement was the holiest day.  The Septúagint/LXX identifies the Day of Atonement as a double sabbath.  Le.23:26-32 LXX “On the 10th day of the 7th month is the day of atonement, holy to you. It is a perpetual precept throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be to you a sabbath [Strongs g4521, Greek] of sabbaths [g4521].”  Le.16:29-31 LXX “On this day he [high priest] shall make atonement for you to cleanse you from all your sins before the Lord, and you shall be clean. It is a sabbath [g4521] of sabbaths [g4521] to you, and you shall afflict your souls [fast].”

Unlike God’s pilgrim temple feasts, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kíppur h3725, Hebrew) was kept in all their dwellingsJewish Virtual Library “The most important day of the year. It was said that even if all the other festivals were to be abrogated, the Day of Atonement…would remain.”  It was the Lord’s day.  And this annual double-sabbath was the only recurring day of fasting commanded by God.

Luke wrote in Ac.27:9, “Sailing was now dangerous, since the fast was already past”.  The Day of Atonement was then being observed within the Roman Empire.  Cambridge Bible “The fast here meant is that of the great Day of Atonement.”  Ellicott Commentary “The date may have been fixed on St Luke’s memory by St Paul’s observance of the Fast.”  The fact that Luke refers to it indicates the Day of Atonement was being kept by Jews, and probably by many Christians too, outside the Holy Land.  Adam Becker The Ways That Never Parted, p.268Gentile Christians from Syria-Palestine continued to celebrate Yom Kippur together with their Jewish neighbors until at least the 4th century, as sermons by Origen and Chrýsostom prove.”  The Day of Atonement was a well-known occasion.

Some think John (a Jewish Christian) had been fasting when he received the book of Revelation.  John eats a scroll (Re.10:9-10), but no food is indicated.  Franklin Hall Glorified Fasting “The Revelation of Jesus Christ was given to John on the rugged Isle of Pátmos, where he’d been placed to starve to death. John converted his intended starvation into one of the greatest consecration fasts. Revelation of this kind almost always came to a prophet on an empty stomach.”  Also seen in Revelation, is atonement.

The Lord had instructed Moses/Israel in Le.25:8-10, “You shall sound the trumpet [LXX g4536] abroad on the 10th day of the 7th month, on the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet. You shall thus set apart the 50th year as holy, and proclaim liberty throughout all the Land unto all the inhabitants thereof. It shall be a jubilee for you.”  The Day marked the jubilee special event.  (Part of this verse was inscribed on the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA in 1752 AD.)

I awakened the sabbath morning of May 7, 2016 with Isaiah 58 impressed on my mind.  The chapter is about a proper fast.  Is.58 was traditionally read in the synagogue on the Day of Atonement!  The Lord instructed the prophet Isaiah in Is.58:1, “Shout aloud, don’t hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to My people their transgression.”  Proclaim it loudly, like the sound of a ram’s horn, a shofár (h7782).  In Is.58:1, the Greek LXX trumpet is g4536 Strongs.  Is.58:1 refers to the Day of Atonement.

God continued in Is.58:2-3, “Yet they [Israel] seek Me daily. ‘Why have we fasted’, they say, ‘and You don’t see? Why have we afflicted our souls, and You don’t notice?”  Though they afflicted their souls on Yom Kippur (Le.16:29, 23:27, Nu.29:7), their fast was insincere.  Pulpit Commentary Is.58:3 “The fast spoken of is probably that of the great Day of Atonement. The Day of Atonement was, like the sabbath, a day on which no work was to be done (Le.16:29).”  Ellicott Commentary Is.58:3Only one fast, the Day of Atonement, was prescribed by the Law.”  Benson Commentary Is.58:3 “Wherefore have we afflicted our soul’ – defrauded our appetites with fasting.”  To fast was to afflict one’s soul.

The Lord continued in Is.58:6, “Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen…?”  The Day of Atonement was set by the Lord.  Pulpit Commentary Is.58:6 “This passage stands like a homily for the Day of Atonement.”  God ordained it, not man.  It was the Lord’s day, quite unlike any other day!

We read in Le.25:9 and Is.58:1-ff that the trumpet sounded on the Day of Atonement (especially in the jubilee year).  It was the only double-sabbath day of the Lord.  It is present in the book of Revelation.

Re.1:9-11 “I, John…was on the island of Patmos. I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet [g4536], saying, ‘Write in a book what you see.”  Notice the similarity to Le.25:9 and Is.58:1.  It was on this holiest day of the year, the Lord’s Day of Atonement fast, when the trumpet was loudly sounded (Le.25:9).  John hears Jesus’ voice loud like a trumpet on the Lord’s Day (Re.1:10), and Isaiah was to raise aloud his voice like a trumpet on this fast day (Is.58:1).

John told Jesus’ message to the seven churches of Asia Minor in Re.2–3.  Then John writes in Re.4:1-2, “After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice, which I had heard like a trumpet [g4536], said, ‘Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things. A throne was set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.”  John sees the heavenly sanctuary!

There was only one day of each year when man was permitted entrance to the Most Holy Place of God’s tabernacle/temple sanctuary.  (ref Part 1.)  On the Day of Atonement the high priest was allowed to approach the Lord who dwelt between the chérubim atop the ark.  That Day the trumpet sounded; the priest saw the ark.  John wrote in Re.11:19, “The sanctuary of God was opened in heaven, the ark of His covenant appeared in His sanctuary”.  John too saw the ark (containing the Decalogue) on that Day.

God had said in Is.58:13, “If you will turn away your foot from the sabbath, from doing your interests on My holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord”.  Ellicott Commentary Is.58:13 “The sabbath is as holy ground.”  Matthew Poole Commentary Is.58:13 “Whether we understand it of the occasional sabbath in solemn humiliations or otherwise set apart for sacred services, which is called a sabbath, Le.16:31 [Day of Atonement].”  The sabbath fast of Yom Kippur was the most sacred day.

Matthew Henry Commentary Is.58:14 “Even in Old Testament times the sabbath was called the Lord’s Day, and is fitly called so still; and for a further reason, it is the Lord Christ’s day, Re.1:10.”  Matthew Henry identified “the Lord’s Day” of Re.1:10 as a sabbath.

Whereas John refers to Sunday as the “first of the week” (Jn.20:1, 19)…not “the Lord’s day” of Re.1:10.  The Lord’s Day…“My holy day”…was a sabbath.  (also see the topics, “Sabbath 7th Day” and “Sabbath Day Became Sunday in Rome”.)

Wikipedia “The shofar is blown in synagogues at the end of every Yom Kippur. The Rabbis created the practice of the Shofar’s sounding every Yom Kippur rather than just on the Jubilee (once in 50 years).”

Yet that Lord’s Day sabbath of Re.1:10 may have been an actual Jubilee Day of Atonement!

The prophet Ezekiel recorded years by counting from their captivity and/or the jubilee year.  Each new jubilee cycle was proclaimed by a trumpet sounding on the 10th day of the 7th month…Yom Kippur.

Ezekiel wrote in Ezk.1:1-2, “In the 30th year…I was by the river Chebár among the exiles. In the 5th year of King Jehoiachín’s exile, the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel the priest in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar.”  ref 2Ki.24:10-16.  The river Chebar in N. Mesopotámia flows into the Euphrates.  King Jehoiachin/Jeconiáh/Coniah and Judah were taken captive by Babylon in 597 BC.  Jewish Virtual Library “In the winter of 597 BCE Nebuchadnézzar exiled him.”  The 5th year of exile was 592 BC.

Later Ezk.40:1-3, “In the 25th year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the 10th of the month in the 14th year after the city was taken, on that same day the hand of the Lord was upon me. In the visions of God He brought me into the Land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain.”  The previous civil year ended as the new year began near the autumnal equinox (Sep 20), see Ex.23:16 & Ex.34:22.  New Year’s Day was Rosh Hashánah, the 1st day of the 7th month Tíshri.  The 10th of the month was the Day of Atonement (followed by the Feast of Ingathering/Booths).  Jerusalem was destroyed in 587-586 BC.

God gave Ezekiel visions on that jubilee Day of Atonement!  The year was 573-572 BC.  Ezekiel was fasting.  The “30th year” prior to Ezk.1:1 was the previous jubilee of 622 BC.  Barnes Notes Ezk.40:1 “If that was a jubilee year, which is highly probable, this vision also falls in a jubilee year. The jubilee year began with the month of Tishri, a sufficient reason for speaking of the time as ‘the beginning of the year.’ The 10th day of this month was the day of atonement, Le.16:29-30.”  The civil year (not the sacred year) began on Tishri 1.  Geneva Study Bible Ezk.40:1 “This is to be understood as September.”  Rodger C. Young The Jubilee and Sabbatical Cycles “The prophet Ezekiel, aware that the Day of Atonement in his 25th year of captivity would mark the beginning of a year of Jubilee….”  Jacob Milgrom Ezekiel’s Hope “The probable reference of the ‘25th year’ to the jubilee year, which begins in the fall (Le.25:9).”  622 – 50 = 572.

Chronology of Jubilees “It can more firmly be established that Ezekiel could have received his vision of a new Temple around the time of a 50th year of a 50-year cycle. Essentially, the year 572 BC hypothetically did correspond with around the time of a jubilee year.”  Yom Kippur proclaimed jubilee.

rootsweb.ancestry.com Ezekiel 1:1-2 & Ezekiel 40:1 “The final year or the Jubilee year which began on the 10th day of the 7th month on the 49th year and then concluded with the 50th year. Now one should be able to see that if the 5th year of king Jehoiachin’s captivity was in fact the 30th year of the Jubilee count and that 20 years passes that it would then be the 50th year or the Jubilee year in which King Jehoiachin’s 25th year of captivity came to pass as the scripture gives note.”  Ezekiel noted it.

The remainder of the book of Ezekiel, chapters 40–48, consists of the awe-inspiring visions God gave beginning on that Day of Atonement fastPulpit Commentary Ezk.40:1 “Of the prophet’s [Ezekiel’s] utterances, it was beyond question the grandest and most momentous.”  Given him on that Lord’s Day.

Similarly, it seems the awesome visions which John recorded in Revelation came on the Day of Atonement, centuries later!  The day wasn’t just some Sunday.  Continuing in Ezk.40 are verses which compare with Revelation.  Ezk.40:2 & Re.21:10 both Ezekiel and John envisioned a very high mountain.  Ezk.40:3 & Re.11:1 both Ezekiel and John envisioned a measuring rod.

Also on Yom Kippur, God executed His judgment of His people, sealing the verdict.  Again Re.4:1 “I saw a door standing open in heaven.”  That was between the Holy Place and Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement.  v.2 John sees the throne inside the Most Holy Place on that Day.

Re.8:1-3 “When He [Jesus the Lamb] broke the 7th seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much incense was given to him to offer with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne.”  (He.9:3-5 describes the earthly sanctuary type of the heavenly. “There was a sanctuary called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar/[censer] of incense and the ark of the covenant. Above it were the cherubim….”)

Continuing with Re.8:4-5, “The smoke of the incense with the prayers of the saints went up before God. And the angel took the censer and he filled it with the fire of the altar and threw it to the earth [Land].”  The high priest took a golden censer into the Holy of Holies only on the annual day of atonement.

Following is Isaac Newton’s commentary tying Re.8:1-5 to the Day of Atonement…William Whitla Sir Isaac Newton’s Daniel and the Apocalypse, p. 314-315: “The 7th seal was therefore opened on the day of expiation [day of atonement], and then there was silence in heaven for half an hour. And an angel (High-Priest) stood at the altar having a golden censer; and there was given him incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints, upon the golden altar which was before the throne.’ The custom was….while he offered the incense, the people prayed without in silence, which is the silence in heaven for half an hour. When the High-Priest had laid the incense on the Altar, he carried a Censer of it burning in his hand, into the most holy place be­fore the Ark. ‘And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel’s hand.”

But in Re.8:5, the angel overturns the golden censer, to pour out God’s judgments upon the Land!  The Lord chooses to ignore prayers of Judah, and refuses the atonement.  Ellicott Commentary Re.8:5 “As in the parallel vision in Ezk.10:2 when the man clothed with linen is bidden to ‘go in between the wheels, even under the cherub, and fill his hand with coals of fire from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the doomed city’; so here the ashes fall—the judgments are at hand.”  The doomed city in Ezk.10:2 also is Jerusalem (ref Ezk.8–11).  Jerusalem previously was destroyed in 586 BC.

Again, the ark in the Holiest Place was seen by man only on the Day of Atonement.  Re.11:19 – John Tudor Church of England Quarterly Review “The temple of God is then opened, and the ark of his testament seen, 11:19; and the voice issues from the throne, 16:17; both expressions equally denoting the holy of holies, which was only en­tered once a year….All the imagery in this poem was taken from the Day of Atonement—the golden censer, the incense, the deep affliction, the temple opened, and the ark seen indicating the opening of the veil on the day of atone­ment.”  Now let’s go to Re.15….

Re.15:5 “The tabernacle of the testimony is opened.”  God’s testimony was the Decalogue (Ex.31:18).  It was written on two tablets and contained in the ark, which was in the Holy of Holies.  The Lord’s judgment is based upon His commandments and principles.

Re.15:6 angels therein are clothed with linen (g3043).  Only on the Day of Atonement could the high priest enter the Holiest Place clothed in linen holy garments (Le.16:4, 23, 32 LXX), not his everyday priestly attire.  Matthew Poole Commentary Re.15:6 “These angels came in the habit of high priests.”

Blood was carried into the Most Holy Place.  The high priest sprinkled the blood of atonement seven times on the altar of incense before the Lord (Le.16:19).  But in Re.15:7, angels representative of the high priest have seven bowls filled with the blood-red wine of…the wrath of God (cf. Re.14:10)!

Re.15:8 “And the sanctuary was filled with smoke.”  A cloud or smoke-screen had protected, in a sense, the high priest in the sanctuary, lest he die (Le.16:12-13).  This event occurred only on Yom Kippur.

Then in Re.16, God executes His verdict/judgment.  Rosh Hashanah and the Days of Awe Lead to the Time of Judgment “Yom Kippur. That’s when the judgment falls.”  The bowls containing God’s blood-red wrath…are poured out upon the Land!  Re.16:3-5 two angels pour out their bowls; the sea, rivers, springs became blood!  Josephus Wars of the Jews 3:10:9 “The lake [of Gennesarét] is all bloody, and full of dead bodies.”  That was the Sea of Galilee during the Roman-Jewish War of 66–70 AD.

Peter J. Leithart Atonement Inverted (9/25/2015) “Though the Jews who killed Christians think they are doing service to God, this offering is rejected, and the blood is instead poured out on the land.  Instead of cleansing the land, this rejected atonement pollutes it.”

This inversion atones for the innocent blood shed in the Land.  Re.16:6-7 “For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and Thou have given them blood to drink. They got what they deserved.”  Blood for blood.  The blood of martyrs is figuratively poured back upon the guilty Land, defiled with blood.

In Mt.23, Jesus had prophesied woes upon the Jewish leaders who opposed Him.  Mt.23:33-37 “You serpents, you brood of vipers. Upon you shall come the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on the earth [Land]. Truly I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem, you that kill the prophets.”  The Lord declared His judgment upon those responsible for the blood of righteous Israelites & Jewish Christians.  It happened.

Le.24:17 “If a man takes the life of any human being, he shall surely be put to death.”  The lifeblood of man atones for the blood of man.

Atonement makes possible the reconciliation of man, and even God’s creation, to God.  It involves His judgment.  Nu.35:33-34 “You shall not pollute the Land in which you are; for blood pollutes the Land and no expiation can be made for the Land for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it. You shall not defile the Land in which you live, in the midst of which I dwell.”

Leithart op. cit. “Here [in Re.16], the blood of the saints is poured out on the land, and calls up an avenger of blood who will bring the blood of the killers to return on their own heads.”

Centuries earlier, the Lord had denied the atonement for the northern kingdom of Israel.  He sent them into captivity to Assyria in 721 BC.  Later, the Lord denied the atonement for the southern kingdom of Judah.  He sent them into captivity to Babylon; Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC.  Likewise, the Lord denied the atonement for Judah after Jesus was crucified.  Titus destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD.  For more on this aspect of God’s justice, see the topic “Babylon the Great’ in Revelation”.

In conclusion…the book of Revelation, the judgment of God and the wrath of the Lamb (Re.6:16-17, Lk.23:28-30) may seem severe.  But God is just and fair.

The good news for Israel is…Israel and the Jewish people can be re-grafted in!  The apostle Paul wrote in Ro.11:21-26, “Behold the kindness and severity of God. If they [Israel] don’t continue in their unbelief…God is able to graft them in again. And thus all Israel shall be saved.”

“All Israel” includes the Jews.  Paul didn’t know dates…but in God’s good time.  The Lord loves the Jewish people.  As discussed in Part 1, Christ’s atoning blood applies to all peoples, through faith (Ro.3:23-25).  And the final chapters of Revelation are the silver lining after the storm.  Praise the Lord!

Governmental Loyalty for Christians

We know from the Bible that Christians are to obey God.  But does God expect us to obey our human rulers?  Also, if there’s a conflict between obeying God and our government’s laws, what should we do?

Way back in the days of Noah, God prescribed courts of law (Ge.9:5-6).  Law courts are a function of government (govt).  The right of vengeance, revenge or retaliation, belongs to the Lord. “Vengeance is Mine” (De.32:35).  Personal vengeance isn’t to be taken by the individual.  (Ro.12:19 “Avenge not yourselves.”)  Judges or the state or ruler should exercise God’s vengeance & justice on His behalf.  For God’s vengeance and true justice to be carried out, God’s principles of right and wrong must be used.  Using principles from the forbidden tree of good and evil (Ge.2–3) results in uneven, unfair, ‘justice’.

Christ established His theocracy in ancient Israel. (see “Jesus Was The Old Testament God”.)  He made known His laws and true moral principles to Moses/Israel.  They’re based upon love to God and love to neighbor…De.6:5 and Le.19:18.  Law courts were among Christ’s guidelines, De.17:8-11.  The tribe of Levi served as the religious leaders (the clan of Aaron) and as govt judges & administrators.  Israel’s was the only govt then with detailed knowledge of God’s moral principles and sense of justice.

Other peoples & nations had rulers whose laws and policies were a mixture of good and evil.  Yet God isn’t an anarchist.  He’d authorized govt to regulate societies and bring order from chaos.

Early-on when Adam defected from God, man’s dominion on earth was given or delivered to satan by default, Lk.4:5-7 & Mt.12:26.  Satan is the unseen influence upon rulers and govt. (also see “Kingdom of God”.)  Da.2:20-21, 37 yet Godremoves kings and sets up kings”.  God gave sovereignty to King Nebuchadnézzar of Babylon.  Previously, the Lord selected Hazaél to be king of Syria (1Ki.19:15).

The Most High is Ruler over all of mankind (and satan); and God bestows govt on who He wills.  Da.4:17 God may allow an evil ruler (“the lowliest of men”) as a form of judgment or chastisement for wrongs a nation committed.  Pr.28:15-16 “Like a roaring lion or a hungry bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people. A leader who lacks judgment is a great oppressor.”  Jesus said to Pilate the governor in Jn.19:11, “You would have no authority against Me, unless it were given you from above”.  The Roman state possessed delegated authority from God.

Yet not all rulers are God-appointed!  Ho.8:3-4 “Israel has rejected the good. They have set up kings, but not by Me; they have appointed rulers.”  (All kings of the northern kingdom of Israel were bad.)

Although ancient Israel knew of the Lord’s principles, they didn’t obey them.  Most Israelites didn’t have God’s Holy Spirit (HS).  The HS writes God’s laws on the hearts & minds of Christians (He.8:10).  We internalize His moral principles, and obedience to God is possible.  We must want to obey God.

Christians with the HS are sons of God.  Paul wrote in Ro.8:14, “All who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God”.  According to Peter, obedience to God is a requirement to have the HS.  Peter said in Ac.5:32, “The Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him”.  Here the Greek term for obey is peitharchéo Strongs g3980.  It occurs four times (Ac.5:29, 32, 27:21; Ti.3:1) in the New Testament (NT), and means ‘to obey a superior’.  To be persuaded the superior should be obeyed.  In Ac.5:32, the Superior is God Himself.  1Esdras 8:94 (Septúagint/LXX and KJV 1611 edition) “As many as do obey [g3980] the law of the Lord.”  God’s principles are to be obeyed.

Not only God and His principles are to be obeyed.  Ti.3:1 “Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey [g3980] them.”  Paul said for Titus to remind those on Crete to obey human rulers.  So both God and (right) human rulers/government laws in general are to be obeyed.

But should a Christian’s citizenship duty have precedence over his duty to obey God?  Peter said in Ac.5:27-29, “We must obey [g3980] God rather than men”.  When there’s a conflict between obeying God’s principles/instructions, and those of the human govt or ruler…Peter was persuaded that God the Higher Authority must be obeyed!  Peter & John told the rulers in Ac.4:19-21, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge”.  The authorities threatened them and let them go.  (But later in Ac.12:1-3 they killed John’s brother James, and arrested Peter.)

So Peter said obedience to God has priority over obedience to men.  Peter also said to submit to rulers.  1Pe.2:13-18 “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every institution of man, whether to the king, or to governors….Honor all men; honor the king. Servants submit to your masters.”  Here the Greek verb for submit is hupotásso g5293.  It occurs 40 times in the NT.  But submit (g5293) to authority doesn’t always mean obey!  Greek Bible scholar Spiros Zódiates “Originally it showed one’s relation to superiors. The verb doesn’t immediately carry with it the thought of obedience.”  e.g. Paul told the church in Ep.5:21, “Submit [g5293] to one another in the fear of God”.  Not always ‘obey’ each other.  And 1Pe.5:5 “You younger, submit [g5293] yourselves to the elder.”

Paul wrote in Ro.13:1-5, “Let every soul submit [g5293] to the governing authority….But if you do what is evil, be afraid, for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a servant of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who does evil.”  Subjection to rulers is a general principle.  Capital crimes can result in capital punishment from govt officials (some officials may even be Christians).

A ruler should be just, acting as God’s servant to rightfully maintain law & order.  The ruler shouldn’t be corrupt nor terrorizing good works nor promoting evil or criminality.  In Ro.13, ca 57 AD, Paul isn’t discussing evil rulers like Nero.  Jesus wouldn’t approve for a Christian to serve as a (military) hit man for an evil regime, e.g.  (see the topic “War & Killing and the Bible Christian”.)  If a govt wants us to perpetrate evil on its behalf, we’re to obey God’s right principles instead (Ac.5:29).  Yet in return, we may have to submit to punishment the govt could administer to us.

In Ro.13:6-8, Paul addressed paying taxes.  Jesus said in Mt.22:21, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s”.  The tithe system in God’s theocracy of ancient Israel went to both church and state. (see “Tithe to Church and State”.)  Human govts and policies aren’t all good.  What if an oppressive tax results in one’s family suffering hunger?  We’re to love one another (Ro.13:8).  Ought unjust taxes be paid to anyone?  That’s a personal decision in each situation.  Nations’ tax rates vary.  The Boston Tea Party of 1773 protested British taxation.  But there can be consequences for the delinquent taxpayer.

In Ro.13:1-ff, perhaps Paul is somewhat protective or defensive, not wanting Christians to risk being expelled from Rome, as Jews were in 19 AD & 49 AD (Ac.18:2 under Emperor Claudius).  Paul wrote general guidelines in Ro.13.  Surely Jesus wouldn’t have given blanket approval to evil Nero’s current rule (54–68 AD)!  Submit doesn’t always mean obey.  Disobeying God to obey a government’s evil is ungodly.

Jesus submitted to His captors (e.g. Is.53:7, 1Pe.2:23), though He’d committed no crime.  Jesus said in Mt.5:38-39, “You have heard, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’. But I say to you, don’t resist an evildoer.”  The “eye for an eye” is the lex taliónis principle (e.g. Le.24:19-20), retribution or retaliation via the courts commensurate with the crime.  Don’t take personal vengeance, even when the Roman justice system was unjust vis-à-vis the principles of justice which Christ gave to ancient Israel.

{Sidelight: Mt.5:40-42 “If anyone will sue you and wants to take your shirt, let him have your cloak also. Whoever shall force you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks of you, and don’t deny him who wants to borrow from you.”  That, even though Christ had told Israel to return before sunset a cloak which was taken as a pledge/collateral (Ex.22:26-27).  Roman military law allowed a soldier to compel a civilian to carry his 65–85 lb pack (only) one mile.  In De.15:7-9, Christ instructed Israelites to give or lend to one’s poorer neighbor.  De.23:19 the lender wasn’t to charge interest.  Lk.6:34-35 “Do good and lend, expecting nothing in return.”  Not usury.  Mt.6:12 as we forgive our debtors (a debt was suspended during the 7th year of release, De.15:1-2, 9.)  Unlike Rome…God is generous, just and fair!}

Ro.12:18-19 “If possible, live at peace. Don’t avenge yourselves, beloved, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”  Again, judges or the state should exercise God’s right justice & vengeance for Him.  In Ex.22:8-9, judges are even termed “elohím” (“God” h430, Hebrew), since they’re to render God’s verdict.  Ps.82:1-4 courts (judges/elohim h430) should be backed by God’s just principles.  The individual or family isn’t authorized to take the law into their own hands.

God’s morality and justice system differs from that of Roman emperors: Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero.  But Jesus, Peter, Paul weren’t anarchists.  Is.33:22 “The Lord is our judge, The Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; He will save us.”  God performs all three functions of govt: judicial, legislative, executive.  He is for right law & order.  Christ had given just laws to ancient Israel.

Jesus said in Mt.23:23, justice and mercy are weightier provisions of the law!  Not ceremonial matters (which were performed at or brought to the temple).  Yet an oft-repeated topic of TV evangelists is donating money or tithing!  And there are Hebrew roots groups which emphasize (or argue) ceremonial temple feasts and the calendar, more than God’s justice!  Mic.6:8 “What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with thy God?”  Justice and mercy are priorities.

God’s principles are the true standard.  Ja.4:12a Weymouth “The only real Lawgiver and Judge is He who is able to save and to destroy.”  Philo wrote in the 1st century AD, On the Life of Moses 2, p.495 “The same Being was the Father and Creator of the world, and likewise the Lawgiver of truth.”  Only God is completely justHuman govt laws are just to the extent they are based, at least in principle, upon God’s moral laws.

The Body of Liberties, dated 1641, was the first legal code in America.  In colonial Massachusetts, that code enacted as law some of Christ’s law which He’d given to Moses/Israel.  Before the American Revolution, Jonathan Mayhew (1720–1766) in When Is Resistance a Duty? preached there is a higher law than any government’s law!  Loyalty to God has priority.

What options might Christians or a people who are being oppressed by an unjust ruler or govt have?  It may be too difficult or impossible to defect, leave the country.  (The American Revolution succeeded.)

There’s civil disobedience or resistance to unjust rule/laws.  Ex.1:15-20 “The midwives feared God and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them. So God did good to the midwives.”  Prior to ancient Israel’s exodus, those midwives were rewarded by God for their civil disobedience to Pharaoh.

1Ki.18:17-ff Elijah openly challenged Aháb, the king of Israel in the north.  Da.1:8, 15-20 young Daniel was at the court of Babylon.  He refused to disobey Christ’s dietary laws or drink wine to idol gods; yet ten days later King Nebuchadnezzar elevated him to a position.  But resistance may be punished.

Da.3:14-19 Daniel’s three friends refused to obey Nebuchadnezzar; they wouldn’t commit idolatry.  As a consequence, the king had them thrown into a furnace of fire.  (God protected them.)  As was already noted, Peter was willing to go to jail, rather than quit teaching in Jesus’ name (Ac.5:27-29).

The medieval law of jus prímae nóctis gave the noble or feudal lord the right to sleep with peasant brides of the manor the first night.  Roman chieftains had also practiced this adultery.  Should Christian newlyweds have obeyed that decree…or resisted?  The hero of the movie Braveheart supposedly engaged in an illegal secret marriage (having no document), attempting to circumvent that evil decree.

The person who resists or (civilly) disobeys an unjust law/decree of men, or who obeys an opposing just principle of God, may have to remain and submit to consequences for his or her action…punishment.

Ac.22:24-29 Paul, a Roman citizen, appealed to Roman law for his own defense.  Paul wasn’t violent then, yet he resisted illegal mistreatment.  Ac.16:36-39 Paul knew and asserted his rights under Roman law, and in so doing he was submitting to the govt system (ref Ro.13:1).

Yet Paul wrote to the church in 1Co.6:1, “Does any of you who has a case against another dare to go to court before the unrighteous, and not before the saints?”  v.4-8 Paul admonished brethren to utilize church(/synagogue) courts or tribunals first, instead of secular courts.  (But later, beware the Catholic Inquisition!)

Whose laws are just?  Those of…Mr. Obama, Israel’s Netanyahu, Germany’s Angela Merkel, Russia’s Putin, Cuba’s Castro, Iran’s Ayatóllah Khaménei, the IRS?  Since God is the Lawgiver…the only truly just laws are laws based, at least in principle, on His!  Today USA law is based on: God’s morality, Greco-Roman law, historical Roman Catholic Church dogma, the Constitution, party politics, etc.  By comparing the laws of one’s govt to God’s principles, citizens may determine the justness of the govt.

Patriotism towards an unjust or tyrannical govt or some of its actions…can be a form of idolatry!

Christians or peoples may seek to become free from an unjust tyrant.  Ex.6:6-7 “I AM the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the oppressions of the Egyptians.”  Rather than ancient Israel continuing to submit to bondage, God freed them from Egypt by means of divine plagues!  Peoples have revolted.

Paul addressed slavery in 1Co.7:21-23. “Were you called while a slave? Don’t worry about it; but if you are able to become free, do that. You were bought with a price; don’t become slaves of men.”  Slaves comprised approximately 33% of the Roman Empire populace.  Paul exhorted Christian slaves to seek freedom.  We should let God guide our life; we shouldn’t be controlled by, or in bondage to, men.  Some slaves attempted to flee to the countryside.  The slave revolt led by Spartacus the gladiator occurred in 73 BC.

Slavery in ancient Israel was more often bond servitude.  The fugitive law is De.23:15-16. “You shall not hand over to his master a servant who has escaped to you.”  (Unlike our 1850 Fugitive Slave Act.  cf. 1852 Uncle Tom’s Cabin.)  e.g. 1Sa.30:13-15 the Egyptian who was servant to an Amalekite didn’t want David to return him to his master.  In the NT letter to Philémon, Paul gave shelter to Onésimus (v.13).  Even under Roman rule, Paul needn’t return him as a fugitive.

David was a man after God’s own heart (Ac.13:22).  He said God’s law was upright/complete (Ps.19:7).   Ps.18:17-24 David had valued God’s injunctions…the Lord delivered him from King Saul.

God is for individual freedom, within govt structure.  Christ’s theocracy in ancient Israel is a prototype.  Kingdom of God govt is based upon love to God and love to neighbor.  Our individual ability to love & serve others depends on our response to the HS within, and our personal health and energy level.

Again, God’s laws have precedence over contradictory laws of man.  Php.3:20 “Our citizenship is in heaven.”  Christians have dual citizenship, a heavenly and an earthly.  Our loyalty is first to God.

Also there’s a place for civil disobedience, and even obtaining total freedom from tyranny/unjust rule.  Citizens who disobey ungodly govt principles, but don’t defect…may have to submit to punishment.

John wrote in 1Jn.5:19, “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one”.  Satan impacts kingdoms of man.  Mankind has eaten from the wrong tree, a mixture of good & evil.  Some of man’s statutes are good, others are bad.  Blind patriotism and chronyism exists.  The HS knows true principles & justice.

It was a blessing to grow up in this country, compared to conditions in some other nations.  Yet the saints of God seek a “better country” (He.11:14-16).  Re.11:15 “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord; and He shall reign forever.”  Worldly kingdoms of man are delivered to Jesus.  He’s the completely just King of kings (Re.19:16)!  In the meantime, humanity will experience decadent govts to varying degrees.  Lord Jesus…Thy Kingdom come!

Two Witnesses in the Bible

A verdict or judgment is delivered based upon witnesses.  In scripture, two witnesses were required to substantiate a legal matter.  Here we’ll take a historical look at God’s two witnesses from the Bible.

De.17:6 “On the evidence of two or three witnesses shall the condemned be put to death; not on the evidence of one witness.”  De.19:15 “A single witness shall not rise up against a man; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed.”  It’s not limited to public courts.  Jesus applied De.19:15 to disputes between church brothers in Mt.18:16. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses.”  1Ti.5:19 Paul instructed Timothy, “Don’t receive an accusation against an elder except on the basis of two or three witnesses”.  So we see in both Testaments (two!) that at least two witnesses are necessary.

Jesus confirmed the need for two witnesses in Jn.8:16-18.  There, Father God and Jesus Himself are as two witnesses (not one)!  Even God has His unique two witnesses!  The very first verse of the Bible, Ge.1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”.  Is.1:2 “Listen O heavens and hear O earth, for the Lord speaks!”  Moses declared in De.32:1, “Give ear O heavens and let me speak; let the earth hear the words of my mouth”.  Scripture shows that heaven and earth serve as two immutable witnesses for God.  And, as we’ll see below…it was the witnesses who put the condemned to death.

Moses told ancient Israel in De.30:19, “I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse”.  Also De.4:26 “I call heaven and earth to witness against you, that you shall surely perish from the Land.”  Furthermore, the law of God has its source in heaven; Christ gave it to Moses & Israel on earth.  The Decalogue was written by the finger of God (Ex.31:18)!  Then De.31:26-28 “Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God that it be a witness against you…Call heaven and earth to witness against them.”  The Old Covenant law was authored by God in heaven for Israel on earth.

Not only did two witnesses testify, they also carried out the judgment or sentence.  De.17:7 “The hand of the witnesses shall be the first to put him to death.” (also Le.24:14, Jn.8:7)  They cast the first stone, as it were.  God commanded natural phenomena in the heavens and the earth, as two witnesses, to execute His judgments!  We read of thunder, lightning, wind, rain, hailstones, earthquakes, fire, famine carrying out His punishments.  Nu.16:31-32 “The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their households.”  Is.29:6 “From the Lord you will be punished with thunder and earthquake, with whirlwind, tempest and a consuming fire.”  Ps.148:8 “Fire and hail, snow and clouds, stormy wind fulfilling His word.”  The two witnesses act as God’s agents.  Re.16:17-21 “There were flashes of lightning and peals of thunder, and a great earthquake. And huge hailstones came down from heaven upon men.”  Also De.11:17 “The Lord will shut up the heavens so there will be no rain, and the earth won’t yield its produce, so you will perish from the Land.”  The guilty put to death by heaven & earth.

So heaven and earth were two witnesses.  (Earth isn’t a ‘heavenly body’ in scripture).  And God’s Old Covenant law was linked to both.  Words & actions aren’t hidden from the (figurative) ears & eyes of heaven and earth.  Jesus prayed to Father God, Mt.6:10 “Thy will be done, in heaven as it is on earth”.

Let’s now turn our focus to two Bible characters/witnesses through whom God worked miracles…Moses and Elijah.  They were witnesses for the true Deity.

Moses is the compiler, writer, transmitter (Jn.1:45) of the Law/Toráh, the first five books of the Bible.  Ex.3:13-15 the true Deity was revealed to Israel through Moses.  Ex.7:19-20 Moses turned water into blood, the first plague on Egypt.  Other plagues from God follow in Ex.8-12.  Ex.14:21 Moses was the agent to divide the water of the Reed Sea.  After YHVH freed the Israelites, Moses escorted them to Mt. Sinai, Ex.19:1-3, 10-17.  In Ex.30:25-30, Moses anointed with oil the tabernacle, ark and priests.  The Lord did miracles, judged Egypt, and governed the Israelites through Moses and the law of God.  In the end, Moses left this life in an unusual way (seemingly he wrote De.34:5-ff posthumously)!

Elijah has been called the grandest and most romantic character Israel ever produced.” (Smith’s Bible Dictionary)  Elijah was active c 900–850 BC.  2Ki.1:7-8 his unusual appearance was easily identifiable.  Elijah was from the rugged highland area of Gileád in the tribe of Manasséh.  He wore a hairy garment with a leather belt, and a sheepskin cloak/mantle which he wrapped around his head (1Ki.19:13).

Many miracles were performed through Elijah/Eliyáh.  In 1Ki.18, he confronted King Aháb of Israel and the prophets of Báal.  Fire proceeded from YHVH to consume the sacrifice, showing God’s greater power!  EliYah means ‘Yahweh is El/God’…v.39 Eliyah restored knowledge of the true Deity to Israel.  1Ki.17:12-16 the oil supply miraculously continued for the widow and her son.  v.21-24 her son was brought back to life!  1Ki.17:1 prior to Elijah’s encounter with the prophets of Baal, there’d been no rain for 3 ½ years (1,260 days).  1Ki.18:1-2, 40-45 finally, there’s rain (ref Ja.5:17-18, Lk.4:25)!  1Ki.19:15-16 Elijah to anoint kings of Syria & Israel.  2Ki.1:9-15 he called down fire from heaven.  2Ki.2:8 he too divided the water (as did Moses).  v.11-12 in the end, Elijah was transported to heaven!

The last Old Testament (OT) prophet Malachi (or ‘My Messenger’, Mal.3:1) appeared around 450 BC.  He prophesied that someday God’s messenger would come to prepare the way of the Lord (Jesus).  God said, Mal.4:4-6 “Remember the law of Moses My servant. I Am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the day of the Lord. He will restore the hearts, lest I smite the Land with a curse.”

Our OT ends with that passage about Moses & Elijah and the warning from God.  That would be Elijah’s later commission.  J.H. Hertz Pentateuch and Haftorahs “Elijah was traditionally regarded as the advance Messenger who would appear at Passover and announce the dawn of the Messianic era.”  But first came the ‘Silent 400 Years’, when supposedly no one was given the Holy Spirit of prophecy.

Then following the so-called ‘Silent 400 Years’…the Messenger came on the scene.  At the time Jesus was born, holyland Jews thought the Messiah’s coming was imminent.  At the annual Passover meal, they’d even leave a door open and set a place with a wine glass at the table for the expected Elijah!

In fulfillment of Mal.3:1 & 4:6, the person who came on the scene in the 1st century AD as the expected Elijah was…John the Baptizer.  Lk.1:13-17 “It is he who will go before Him [Jesus the Lord] in the spirit and power of Elijah.”  John was born six months before Jesus (Lk.1:24-27).

Jesus confirmed, as scripture prophesied, that the promised Elijah would come…and he had then come!  Mt.17:10-13 “I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him. Then the disciples understood He spoke about John the Baptist.”  John too wore a hairy garment and leather belt, as Elijah had worn.  Mt.3:1-4 “John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness. This is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet saying, ‘The voice of one crying, Make ready the way of the Lord!” ref Is.40:3, Mal.3:1.  The commission given to John the Baptist as “My Messenger” came to pass, although most Jews disbelieve it was John who came as the prophesied Elijah.

John the Baptizer come as Elijah was a witness for Messiah Jesus.  Jn.3:25-27 “John’s disciples came to him and said, ‘He [Jesus] about whom you witnessed.”  John replied in v.28-30, “I have been sent before Him. The friend [best man] of the bridegroom rejoices greatly. This joy of mine is full. He must increase but I must decrease.”  John the Baptizer was a witness for the bridegroom (groom) Jesus.

Moses and Elijah are two witnesses.  The ancient Jewish wedding ceremony required two witnesses, one for bride and one for the groom.  (see the topic “Wedding Pattern in Bible Holydays”.)  Ex.20-ff YHVH was married to Israel at Sinai.  Je.31:31-32 KJV “My covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them,’ saith the Lord.”  Christ, as the pre-incarnate Word of God and Creator, was the Lord God of Israel!  (see “Jesus Was The Old Testament God”.)  Ex.24:6-8 the Old Covenant was as a marriage contract.  v.3 the people said ‘I do’.  Je.3:14 KJV “Saith the Lord, ‘I Am married to you.”  Is.54:5 “Your Maker is your husband.”  (He later divorced rebellious Israel, Je.3:8.)  Jesus said to them in Jn.5:46, “If you believed Moses you would believe Me, for he wrote of Me”.  Moses witnessed Christ’s marriage to ancient Israel.  And John the Baptizer typed Elijah.  The traditional two witnesses were Moses for the bride and Elijah for the groom.

It is significant that Christ and the two witnesses Moses & Elijah are the only 3 characters in the Bible who fasted 40 days!  ref Mt.4:1-2, Ex.34:27-28, 1Ki.19:8-9.  Also it was Moses & Elijah who appeared with Jesus in glory at the Transfiguration, Lk.9:28-33.  (So real, even booths were suggested for them!)  They spoke of Jesus’ soon exodus (v.31, Greek) from Jerusalem.  Moses had led Israel’s ancient exodus from Egypt.  (Lk.9:9 Herod had beheaded John the Baptizer as Elijah prior to the Transfiguration.)

{Sidelight: Could two totally dead people appear in glory with Jesus?  Jn.3:13 only Jesus descended from heaven, died on earth, and then ascended to heaven…nobody else!  (He.11:35 some, such as the widow’s son, and Lazarus Jn.11:43-44, died twice physically.)  Neither Moses nor Elijah descended from heaven.  Elijah’s death wasn’t witnessed and no grave is known.  He was transported to heaven (2Ki.2:11-12), and was expected to come again (Mal.4:6).  De.34:5-7 Moses died, but his death wasn’t witnessed and no grave is known.  Targum Jonathan De.34:6 said Michael had charge over Moses’ grave.  Jude 9 the devil disputed with Michael about Moses’ body (because Moses had killed an abusive Egyptian in Ex.2:11-12, or his grave could become a shrine?).  In Jewish tradition, Michael resurrected Moses.  JFB Commentary Jude 9 “That Moses’ body was raised, appears from his presence with Elijah and Jesus at the Transfiguration.”  Josephus Antiquities of the Jews 4:8:48 “He [Moses] disappeared in a valley, although he wrote in the holy books that he died, done out of fear lest they’d say that because of his extraordinary virtue, he went to God.”  Philo On the Life of Moses 2, p.291 “That he [Moses] might fly away to heaven, he was once more filled with the Holy Spirit, relating how he had died when he was not yet dead. Because he was entombed by immortal powers and wasn’t placed in the tomb of his forefathers.”  Again, Luke says both Moses & Elijah were seen in glory with Jesus on the mount!}

The OT was a three-fold division: Law/Torah…Prophets/Néviim…Psalms-Writings/Ketúvim.  As the word of God, these also serve as two or three witnesses!  The Law and the Prophets were read every sabbath day.  Jesus said in Mt.5:17, “Don’t think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets”.  Following are scriptures which note the Law and the Prophets: Mt.7:12, 11:13, 22:40; Lk.16:16, 24:44; Jn.1:45; Ac.13:15, 24:14, 28:23 (Da.9:10-11; Zec.7:12).  Paul wrote in Ro.3:21, “The righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets”.  They’re two witnesses!

Moses wrote the Law (Da.9:11), and Elijah typified the Prophets.  Moses and Elijah metaphorically are composites representing the Law and all the Prophets!  And Jesus is the prophet like unto Moses – De.18:15, 18; Jn.6:14, 7:40.  Again, both Moses and Elijah left this life in unusual ways.

The Lord’s two witnesses are referred to in Re.11.  v.1-2 God’s physical temple in the holy city Jerusalem is standing.  v.3 “I will grant to my two witnesses and they shall prophesy for 1,260 days.”  Pulpit Commentary Re.11:3 “Moses and Elijah are typical of the Law and the Prophets. It is not probable that two individuals are meant.”  v.4 “The two olive trees and lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.”  This is reminiscent of Zec.4, Zerubabbél the governor and Joshua the high priest who’d laid the second temple foundation.  Moses and Elijah both did anointing, and they stand before the Lord (ref Ex.17:6, 33:21-22, 1Ki.18:15).

Re.11:5-6 the two witnesses have power pertaining to fire, drought, water to turn it to blood, plagues.  Moses and Elijah had been given those powers of heaven & earth.  Moses and/or Elijah divided waters and turned them to blood, brought forth plagues, called down fire, 3 ½ years of no rain.  Meyer NT Commentary Re.11:5 “The features of the description derive from the histories of Elijah and Moses.”  Cambridge Bible Note Re.11:6 “The verse is descriptive of the powers entrusted to Moses and Elijah.”

Moses and Elijah performed miracles done by the two witnesses of Re.11.  They personify the Law and the Prophets.  The Law and the Prophets are two witnesses of God’s verdict that His OT curses and punishments (e.g. De.27:16–28:68, Le.26) be executed upon Judea, Jerusalem, and the temple.  Olufalahan Akintola wrote, “The two witnesses, representing the Law and the Prophets.”

Re.11:7-10 with the Jewish-Roman War and the destruction of 66-70 AD (3 ½ years), the Law and the Prophets ceased in Jerusalem.  The Law and the Prophets or Old Covenant corpus lay in the street, as it were, of the city where the Lord was crucified.  Ellicott Commentary “It is Jerusalem, the apostate place where the Presence of Christ is hated.”  John Blake wrote, “The symbolic death of the two witnesses or the lack of the reading of the Law and the Prophets in the temple.”  God’s written word with its judgments had tormented the disobedient, guilty populace.  Jesus had accused them in Jn.7:19, “None of you carries out the Law”.  After God’s judgment, the city & temple were destroyed/desolated.

Re.11:13 “A tenth of the city fell, 7,000 people were killed.”  Harvard.edu says the size of Jerusalem then encompassed maybe 450 acres, the temple complex covered 37 acres; the estimated resident population was 60,000–80,000 people.  Both Wilkinson and Wikipedia say 75,000–80,000.  The temple area approached a tenth of the acreage of Jerusalem; the initial 7,000 people killed was approximately a tenth of Jerusalem’s population.  The population of Rome the Beast was more than 500,000…Rome was much too large!  JFB CommentaryA tenth of Jerusalem.”  (see the topics “Babylon the Great’ in Revelation”, “The Last Days”, “Day of Atonement (2) – in Revelation”.)

That work of the Law and the Prophets was done!  The Law and Prophets had foretold and accused the Jewish nation of apostasy.  Re.11:12 the Law and Prophets returned to heaven, the source of the word of God.  v.19 “The temple of God in heaven was opened and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple.”  Pulpit Commentary “The ark of His covenant, a symbol pregnant with meaning to Jewish Christians.”  The ark which contained the Law (De.10:1-5, 31:25-26) was now with Christ in heaven!

Christ, the Rock of Israel (1Co.10:4), is just (e.g. De.32:4, Is.30:18, Ro.3:26).  Although He divorced and judged the unfaithful ancient Israelite people He loved…there is another marriage!  Is.62:1-4 “For Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep quiet. You shall no longer be called ‘Forsaken’, or your Land ‘Desolate’. With the joy of a bridegroom over a bride, your God will rejoice over you.”  Re.19:6-9 is the metaphorical marriage of the Lamb Jesus, the bridegroom!  He.8:10-13 although the Old Covenant ended, the New Covenant is also with Israel (and grafted-in gentiles, Ro.11:13, 17 & Re.7:9).

Moses and Elijah exemplify the Law and the Prophetstwo witnessesChristian Research Institute “Ultimately, the two witnesses form a composite image of the Law and the Prophets.”  Elijah was the typological prophetic master (2Ki.2:2-3).  The ark/Law comes from, and goes to, heaven.  Paul wrote in 2Ti.3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”.  The word of God is His written record to His people and to all mankind…witnessed by heaven and earth!  Praise God!

Three Days and Three Nights, Mt.12:40

The timing of Jesus’ Last Supper, and His crucifixion & resurrection, shouldn’t cause confusion or division among Christians.  But it has.  Some have even said the only sign Jesus gave that He’s our Savior was…He’d be dead for three full days and three full nights, 72 hours!  But does a 72–hour time period fit with other relevant scriptures?  How long was Jesus dead?

The only New Testament (NT) passage which could lead to a 72–hour hypothesis is Mt.12:38-40. “Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, ‘We want to see a miraculous sign from You.’ But Jesus replied, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign. But none shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the great fish, so shall the Son of Man be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth.”

By “3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth”, did Matthew mean that the sign of Jonah and of Jesus’ resurrection was…Jesus would be in the tomb for a full 72 hours?  (This topic won’t evaluate modern tales of men surviving inside a whale.)

Or perhaps we shouldn’t even address this issue.  After all, Jesus said the sign, including “3 days and 3 nights”, was given to that evil adulterous generation religiously led by the scribes and Pharisees.  The (idiomatic) “3 days and 3 nights” wasn’t given to the church!  Christ’s church isn’t those “evil” leaders to whom He spoke!  But since the issue has resulted in misunderstanding and a measure of division among some in the church, let’s proceed.

To begin, let’s see from scripture the inclusive manner by which the ancients counted days.

Acts 10 has the account of Peter’s journey from his house in Joppa to Cornelius’ house in Caesárea, approximately 40 miles distant.  v.3 Cornelius saw an angel. “About 3pm he saw an angel in a vision.”  To make the journey sequence plainer, I’ll hypothetically assign Sunday 3pm as when the vision occurred.  Then Cornelius dispatched men to send for Peter.  v.9 “About noon the next day the messengers were on their way, approaching the city.”  They’re nearing Joppa at noon Mondayv.23 “Peter invited them in and gave them lodging. And the next day he arose and went away with them.”  Peter lodged them Monday night, and Tuesday morning he left with them for Caesarea.  v.24 “The following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for them.”  On Wednesday they came to Cornelius’ house.

Ac.10:25-29 Peter goes inside, explains why he agreed to accompany those gentiles, and asks Cornelius why he sent for him.  Cornelius’ reply is key to our understanding the inclusive manner by which the ancients counted days!  v.30Four days ago to this same hour, 3pm, I was praying in my house and a man stood before me in shining apparel!”  Four days ago?!  But from Sunday at 3pm until Wednesday at 3pm is 72 hours…that’s only three days ago according to how we count days.  (Some translations such as Weymouth and the NIV changed v.30 to read “three days ago”, to help readers understand the actual number of elapsed days.)  But to the ancients, there were parts of four days counted: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday (or whatever four successive days they actually were)…even though the elapsed time was only 72 hours.  Understanding this ancient scriptural manner of counting is essential!

British criminal courts count days in this manner…they include any part of one day as a whole day.

More examples of this inclusive counting: Wisdom of Solomon 7:1-2 “In my mother’s womb I was fashioned to be flesh in the time of 10 months.”  Human pregnancy is a little more than 9 months.  But according to the method of counting during Bible times, it was reckoned as 10 months.

Jn.20:26After eight days the disciples were again inside the house.”  To aid reader understanding, several translations and margins render this verse “a week later”.  Gill Exposition “After eight days. That is, the same day, a week later.”  Matthew Poole Commentary “Eight days after the resurrection, counting the day Christ rose for one.”  It’s inclusive counting.

This method of counting days is used today in Africa and parts of Asia.  Wande Abímbola Thoughts on Yoruba, p.120 “Inclusive counting. For example today is Monday, if we do something today, and we will repeat it next Monday, the Yoruba will say, ‘We are going to repeat it eight days from today,’ not seven. We would count today, and we will also count next Monday as well.”  Even in modern Africa, it’s still counted as 8 days, though only 7 days elapsed.

Another Bible incident where John counted days inclusively is Jn.11:17. “When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had been in the tomb four days.”  We saw in Acts 10…the total elapsed time of “four days ago” was actually 72 hours, more like our three daysJFB Commentary Jn.11:17 “Four days…the first and last being incomplete.”  Meyer’s NT Commentary “Two full days and parts of two other days (the first and the fourth).”  To aid understanding, the Weymouth translation changed v.17 to read “three days”.

Jews customarily buried the dead on the day of death (Jn.19:41-42, Ac.5:5-6, 10).  Notice a few verses later in Jn.11:39. “Jesus said, ‘Take the stone away’. But Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, ‘By this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.”  In that climate, women wouldn’t have opened the tomb of a corpse which had decayed for 72 hours (our three days)!

But after Jesus was crucified, the women willingly went to Jesus’ tomb (in the spring)!  Lk.24:1 “On the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared.”  Ac.13:35-37 “The One whom God raised didn’t undergo decay.”  Jesus’ corpse experienced no decay.  Jesus wasn’t in the tomb anywhere near 72 hours!  Let’s see approximately how long Jesus was in the tomb.

In Ac.10:30, Cornelius told Peter that he’d seen the angel “four days ago”.  That elapsed time was 72 hours.  Peter then witnessed about Jesus in v.39-40. “God raised Him from the dead on the 3rd day.”  Paul said the same in 1Co.15:4. “He was buried and raised on the 3rd day according to the scriptures.”  Jesus said of Himself in Mk.9:31, “They shall kill Him, and the 3rd day He shall rise again”.  Several verses witness Jesus would be raised on the 3rd day or “after 3 days”, depending on your translation.

The scriptures also define what was meant by “the 3rd day” in elapsed time.  In Lk.13:32, Jesus referred to “Today and tomorrow, and the 3rd day”.  Luke shows Jesus Himself using inclusive timing!  It’s the same method of counting the Lord used back in Ex.19:10-11. “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Consecrate the people today and tomorrow, and be ready for the 3rd day. For on the 3rd day the Lord will come down on Mt. Sinai.”  Gill Exposition “Not the third day of the month, but the third day from hence.”  Traditionally, the days in that passage were Friday and Saturday, and be ready for Sunday (Pentecost)!

Le.19:6-7 is another example of this inclusive reckoning. “The sacrifice must be eaten on the same day you offer it, and the next day, but any left on the 3rd day shall be burned up.”  This inclusive counting of days, as employed in the Bible, isn’t the method used here in the USA.

Matthew 12:40 is the sole witness who relates “3 days and 3 nights” directly to Jesus.  However, Matthew is also one among others who applied “the 3rd day” timing to Jesus.  Mt.16:21 “Jesus Christ began to show that He must be killed, and be raised up on the 3rd day.”

So it may seem that Mat.12:40 contradicts Matthew elsewhere, as well as contradicting the other writers who affirm “the 3rd day” timing.  But it doesn’t, as we will see.

The sign of Jonah is also referred to in Lk.11:29-30. “An evil generation seeks for a sign. But no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so shall the Son of Man be to this generation.”  Archaeological findings indicate the ancient Ninevites worshiped a fish god (Dagón?).  The great fish that swallowed Jonah miraculously cast him up on the shore alive (Jnh.2:10).  Jesus rose from the dead alive.

But Luke said nothing about “3 days and 3 nights”.  If a 72-hour time frame was the only sign, Luke wouldn’t have ignored it in his (parallel) passage!  No burial is even mentioned.  And Mt.17:23, 20:19, Lk.9:22, 18:33, 24:7, 24:46 all say Jesus would rise “the 3rd day”!

The sign of Jonah was twofold: (1) The ‘resurrection’ miracle.  The fish became a widespread symbol or secret sign of early Christianity.  A fish is found drawn on the walls & tombs of early Christian burial catacombs underneath Rome.  (2) A proclamation of judgment upon a people.

(1) Jonah was from the tribal area allotted to Zebulún in Galilee (2Ki.14:25 & Jsh.19:10, 13).  Jesus was also from Galilee (Mt.4:15).  Jonah arrived in Nineveh after a miraculous ‘resurrection’ from a fish, as a type.  Jonah’s experience in Jonah 1–2 from the Old Greek version (became the LXX/Septúagint) was a type of Jesus’ descent down into Hades, and then His resurrection.  Ac.2:31 “The resurrection of Christ, His soul wasn’t left in Hades [Strongs g86].”  Jesus didn’t remain in the realm of the dead.

Jnh.1:3, 5, 15 LXX “Jonah went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshísh. Jonah went down into the hold of the ship. They cast out Jonah into the sea.”  Jonah went down to Joppa, down into the ship, into the sea, and descended down into the belly of the fish, symbolic of Hades.  Jnh.2:1-7 LXX “Jonah was in the belly of the fish 3 days and 3 nights. God heard me out of the belly of Hades [g86]. You cast me into the depths of the heart of the seas. The lowest deep surrounded me, my head went down; I went down into the earth.”  Down…down…down…down!

Jnh.2:11 LXX “Then the fish cast up Jonah on dry land.”  The belly of the great fish in the deep is analogous to Hades/Sheól, the abode of the dead, in “the earth” (Jnh.2:2, 6 LXX).  Hades is portrayed as “down”.  cf. Lk.10:15 “You Capernaúm will go down to Hades.”

Matthew mentions Jonah three times.  Mt.12:40 is one.  Another is Mt.16:4.  Then in Mt.16:17-19, Jesus said, “Blessed are you Simon bar-Jonáh. You are Peter a small rock; and upon this Rock I will build My church. And the gates of Hades won’t prevail against it.”

Simon Peter was also from Galilee, as was Jesus and Jonah.  Peter was the first apostle to the gentiles (Acts 10), as Jonah was the first recorded Israelite prophet to gentiles.  Jesus refers to the Galilean Peter being sent forth as the “son of Jonah” (bar-Jonah in Aramaic).  The “gates of Hades” cannot prevent Hades from being plundered!  Jesus conquered Hades!  In Mt.27:52, we read of saints resurrected.  Jnh.2:10-11 LXX is a type.

(2) In the Bible, a “generation” can relate to approximately 40 years (e.g. He.3:9-10).  Jnh.3:3-4 Jonah was 3 days in Nineveh prophesying God’s judgment would come upon that city after 40 days.  They repented.  Jesus was 3 years ministering in the Holy Land.  Judea didn’t repent.  Judgment came upon that evil generation approximately 40 years later in 70 AD, and the temple was destroyed.

Again, the sign of Jonah was twofold: resurrection and judgment.

I know of no Old Testament messianic prophecy which clearly numbered Jesus’ days in the tomb.

What was the “3 days and 3 nights” idiom?  The rabbinic view was, “A complete or incomplete day”.  Jewish Encyclopedia, v.4, p. 475 “In Jewish communal life part of a day is at times reckoned as one day; e.g., the day of the funeral, even when it takes place late in the afternoon, is counted as the 1st of the 7 days of mourning; a short time in the morning of the 7th day is counted as the 7th day; circumcision takes place on the 8th day, even though on the 1st day only a few minutes remained after the birth of the child, these being counted as one day.”  The boy was circumcised when he was more like 7 days old.

Jerusalem Talmud Shabbath ix.3 “A day and night are as portions of time and the portion as the whole of it.”  JFB Commentary Mt.12:40 “The period He was to lie in the grave is here expressed in round numbers, according to the Jewish way of speaking, which was to regard any part of a day, however small, included within a period of days, as a full day. (ref 1Sm.30:12, 13; Est 4:16; 5:1; Mt 27:63, 64.)”  3 days and 3 nights wasn’t literally 72 hours.  Again, 72 hours was inclusively “4 days ago” in Acts 10.

1Sm.30:11-13 “He hadn’t eaten food or drank water for 3 days and 3 nights; becoming ill 3 days ago.”   Gill Exposition “One whole day and part of two days.”  It’s not the 4 days ago of Ac.10:30 (72 hours).

Est.4:16–5:1 “Fast for me. Don’t eat or drink for 3 days, night or day….And on the 3rd day Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the king’s house.”  Cambridge Commentary “It may not have really meant more than two nights and the intervening day, a part of the 24-hour day reckoned as a whole one.”  Est.5:4-6 Esther’s banquet (at which she ate) was on that 3rd day.  She didn’t fast for 72 hours!

How else might the “3 days and 3 nights” idiom in Mt.12:40 be interpreted?  Again, in regards to Jesus, that specific time period is witnessed by only this one verse.

Mt.12:40 “The Son of Man shall be 3 days and 3 nights in the heart [g2588 cardía] of the earth [g1093].”  Though most interpret this as Jesus being in the tomb, the Greek term for “tomb” or “grave” isn’t in Mt.12:40!  Again Jnh.2:3-4 LXX “You cast me into the depths of the heart [g2588] of the seas.”  In the LXX, we see the expression “heart of the sea” in Ps.45:2, Pr.23:34, Ezk.27:25.  Also Ezk.28:8 “You shall die the death of the slain in the heart [g2588] of the sea.”  And the “belly of Hades”, the place of the dead in the “earth” (g1093), is referred to at least metaphorically in Jnh.2:3-7 LXX.

Perhaps Jonah did die during the 36 hours or so he was in the belly of the great fish…and miraculously then was resurrected by God.  Pulpit Commentary Jnh.1:17 “3 days and 3 nights; according to Hebrew usage, parts of the days and nights; i.e. one whole day, and parts of the day before and after this. Jonah was released on the 3rd day.”  And Jesus was dead for approximately 36 hours.

Here’s two alternate takes on the possible meaning of Mt.12:40:

#1 Mt.12:40 the Greek term for earth (g1093) can also mean land or the (Holy) Land, depending on the context.  Conjecturally, what if “heart of the earth” referred to a land area, someplace other than Jesus’ tomb?  Ezk.5:5 “Says the Lord, ‘Jerusalem, I have placed her in the center of the nations.”  Ezk.38:12 LXX refers to Jerusalem. “People dwelling in the navel [center] of the earth [land g1093].”  Jerusalem or the Holy Land was central.  1Eno.26:1 is thought to mean Jerusalem. “I went to the middle of the earth.”  Jerusalem in this sense, as the point nearest the Deity (YHVH), was the “heart of the earth”.

In Mt.12:38-42, a theme is judgment of that generation in Jerusalem/Judea.  Jesus’ ministry in the Land was 3 years or so.  Nu.14:34 & Ezk.4:6 reflect the ‘day for a year’ principle.  Some may view “3 days and 3 nights in the heart of the earth/Land” as Jesus’ 3–year ministry (begun Lk.3:23) in the Holy Land.  Not as His time in the tomb.  Again, the Greek term for “tomb” doesn’t appear in Mt.12:40.  Although alternative interpretations of Mt.12:40 have been put forth, perhaps this one is more tentative.

#2 Interpreting “3 days and 3 nights” as literally “3 daylight and 3 dark” periods (unequal), based upon the time from Jesus’ cross to His resurrection.  The breakdown is (Jewish days began at sunset):

Daylight #1 = Abíb 15 Friday 9am–12pm the crucifixion process started (Mk.15:25, Jn.19:14-15).

Dark #1 = Friday 12pm–3pm (Mk.15:33-37).  No solar eclipse when moon is full.  He dies after 3pm.

Daylight #2 = Friday 3pm–6pm.  Daylight returned at 3pm.  Jesus is put in the tomb (Mk.15:46-47).

Dark #2 = Abib 16 Friday 6pm–Saturday 6am.  (Lk.23:54-56) The righteous women rest on the sabbath.

Daylight #3 = Saturday 6am–6pm.  Sabbath ends at 6pm, but the women won’t visit the tomb at night.

Dark #3 = Abib 17 Saturday 6pm–Sunday 6am (Jn.20:1, Lk.24:1).  They visit.  HE IS RISEN! (Mk.16:6)

The timing of this view at least fits.  Of interest is Philo On the Life of Moses 1:21:123, regarding the Ex.10:22 plague of darkness on Egypt. “It resembled one very long night, equal in length to 3 days and nights.”

Incidentally, no gospel writer reckons counting to begin from the hour the tomb guards were stationed.

Conclusion: Jesus was dead for 36 hours or a little longer…from 3–4pm Friday until approximately 4am Sunday.  Bible verses in both the Old and New Testaments clearly define the time period meant by “the 3rd day”.  Those Jews used inclusive timing (unlike us in the USA).  And there are scriptural ‘witnesses’ who apply “the 3rd day” timing to the period from Jesus’ crucifixion to His resurrection.

Let’s see one last example of “the 3rd day”, in Lk.24.  v.1 “On the first day of the week the women went to the tomb.”  They went early Sunday morning.  v.20-22 “The chief priests…crucified Him. Indeed it is the 3rd day since these things happened. Women went to the tomb early this morning.”  Here is inclusive timing, which Luke recorded Jesus Himself using in Lk.13:32. “Today, tomorrow, and the 3rd day.”  He was crucified on Friday and raised on Sunday…the 3rd day.  (Again, a parallel is Ex.19:10-11.)

The expression “3 days and 3 nights” was given to that wicked generation.  It’s not for us in the church.  The Mt.12:40 “3 days and 3 nights” was an idiom known by the Jewish people, but as such didn’t contradict the inclusive reckoning of “the 3rd day” in their culture and mindset.  It didn’t contradict Matthew’s own “3rd day” usage in Mt.16:21.  Whether other or additional interpretations of “3 days and 3 nights” in Mt.12:40 are also valid, is speculation.

The Last Days

There are various eschatologies, interpretations and theories extant regarding the time of the “last days” referred to in the Bible.  And the time of the “last days” is also closely related to the Biblical “end of the age” (not the ‘end of the world/globe’) and the “comingof Christ.

As we examine this topic…can we trust the Bible scriptures as being God-breathed?  2Ti.3:16 Paul wrote regarding the Old Testament (OT), “All scripture is inspired by God”.  God’s Holy Spirit (HS) doesn’t make mistakes.  But there are those who think not all scripture or Bible books are inspired by God.

Let’s look at New Testament (NT) writings about the last days, the end of the age, and Jesus’ coming.

Ac.2:16-17 “What you see was spoken by the prophet Joel, ‘It shall be in the last days.”  Circa (ca) 30 AD at Pentecost in Jerusalem, the apostle Peter indicated the HS outpouring they were seeing there was happening in the last days.

Ja.5:3 “In the last days you have stored-up your treasure.”  Writing in the 50s AD, Jesus’ relative James referred to that time as the last days.

He.1:1-2 “God in these last days has spoken to us by His Son.”  The writer to the Hebrews in the 60s AD called that time the last days.

He.9:26 “Now once in the end of the age [aión Strongs g165, Greek] has He [Christ] appeared.”  Christ’s 1st century sacrifice (ca 30 AD) occurred in the end of the age.  (But which “age” or eon?)

1Co.10:11 “…things written for our admonition, upon whom the end of the age are come.”  Writing to the Corinthian church in the 50s AD, the apostle Paul thought that time was the end of an age.

Ja.5:8-9 “The coming of the Lord draws near; the Judge is standing right at the door.”  In the 50s AD, James said the Lord was even at the door…His coming in judgment was near!

He.10:37 “Yet a little while and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry.”  In the 60s AD, Jesus’ coming will occur in only a little while, and won’t delay.

Re.1:1 “To show things which must soon [táchos g5034, noun] come to pass.” KJV “shortly”.  Thayer’s Greek Lexicon says this term meant “quickness, speed”.  The same term was used in Ac.22:18 when Paul recounted how the Lord had urged him. “Hurry and go out in haste [g5034] from Jerusalem, for they will not receive your testimony about Me”.  Needless to say, Paul didn’t stay in Jerusalem for centuries…he departed soon (ref Ac.9:28-30)!

1Jn.2:18 “Children, it is the last hour [hóra g5610]; even now many antichrists have arisen; from this we know that it is the last hour.”  At the time John wrote that epistle, he and others knew it was then the final hour, so to speak!  It was then the last hour of the last day of the last days!  An end was very near.

This same Greek term is translated “hour” 89 times in the KJV.  For example, in John’s gospel.  Jn.1:39 “It was about the tenth hour [g5610].”  Jn.11:9 “Are there not twelve hours [g5610] in the day?”

Also of note, there were already many antichrists on the scene while the apostle John was still alive to write his epistles!  ref 1Jn.2:18, 22, 4:3; 2Jn.1:7.  (also see the topic “John Wrote Five Bible Books?”.)

Let’s pause here.  Again, the Holy Spirit doesn’t err.  Do we believe the HS spoke through John, Peter, the epistle to the Hebrews, James, Paul?  For that matter, do we believe the OT…what God said to Moses and the prophets?  Do we believe their prophecies about a Messiah?  Do we believe John and the other gospels about Jesus as Messiah?  If the NT writers quoted above regarding the last days, etc. were wrong, then what other portions or books of our Bible might also be untrustworthy?

John wrote in Re.1:3, “For the time is at hand [engús g1451, adverb]”.  Thayer’s engus “Near in time or position”.  Prophesied events were soon to begin.  Most Bible historians think the same John wrote Revelation and John’s gospel.  John used the identical Greek term in Jn.2:13. “The Jews’ Passover was at hand [g1451], and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.”  The time of that Passover was near, not centuries distant.  Mk.13:28 “When the branch of the fig tree puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near [g1451].”  And He.8:13 “The first covenant is growing old and near [g1451] to vanishing.”  The temple would soon be destroyed, and the Old Covenant ritualistic system vanished then (not 2,000 years later).

Time was short when John wrote Revelation.  The latter 2nd century Muratorian Canon list indicates Revelation was written during the reign of Nero (54–68 AD).  The Syriac version Preface to the book of Revelation reads, “The Revelation which was made by God to John the evangelist in the island of Patmos, where he was placed by Nero Caesar”.  Historians say that after Nero died in June 68 AD, exiles would’ve been released.  The temple was still standing in 68-69 AD.  When Nero died, John would’ve left Pátmos.  So John wrote Revelation on Patmos ca 68 AD.  No NT book, not even Revelation, indicates the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple was a past event.  Re.11:1-2 the temple court (and Jerusalem, Lk.21:24) would be trampled by gentiles.  Accordingly, the temple was destroyed in 70 AD.

Re.22:10 “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near/at hand [g1451].”   John again uses the same Greek term as in Re.1:3.  And in contrast to what God had told Daniel for his prophecy, John was instructed to not seal the book of Revelationit’s a revealing, not a concealing!

God had instructed Daniel in Da.12:4-9, 13. “Go your way Daniel, for these words are concealed and sealed up until the time of the end.”  As Da.8:26, the fulfillment was to be kept secret and delayed until the distant future.  Da.12:7 “At the completion of shattering the power of the holy people, these events will be finished.”  Until God’s people/Daniel’s people, the Jews, are crushed.  To be delayed until Re.10:6. “There be delay no longer.”  The fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy is recorded in Revelation!

The 600 years from Daniel until John wrote Revelation is indicated as distant future.  So 2,000 years from John until now wouldn’t be termed…“at hand”!  The Lord doesn’t purposely confuse.  In the Bible, time is almost always denoted in man’s calendar terms of months, years, eras, etc.  And we saw in John’s gospel the manner in which John uses the koiné Greek term which meant “near/at hand”.

Jesus said in Re.22:7, “I AM coming quickly [tachú g5035, adverb]”.  In Jn.11:29, we see how John elsewhere used “quickly” g5035 (it’s not an idiom). “When Mary heard it, she arose quickly [g5035] and was coming to Him.”  It didn’t take her 2,000 years!  Also Mt.28:7 “Go quickly [g5035] and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead.”  As John concluded Revelation’s final chapter…Jesus was then coming soon!  This Greek adverb g5035 occurs 13 times in the NT…it meant quickly.

Mt.24:1-3 Jesus told His disciples privately that the temple would be destroyed.  “Not one stone here shall be left upon another.”  The disciples asked Jesus, “When will these things be, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?”  When will the destruction occur and the age end?

The parallel account in Mk.13 identified four disciples present; Peter, James, JohnAndrew (Mk.13:1-4).  This identity of who Jesus was speaking to largely affects the understanding of Mk.13!

Again, He.9:26 & 1Co.10:11 (ref the top) indicated the 50s–60s AD were at the end of the age.  Mk.13:5 Jesus told Peter, James, John, Andrew, “See to it that no one misleads you. Many will come in My name. But when you hear rumors of wars, the end is not yet.”  Jesus cautioned Peter, James, John, Andrew not to be misled by rumors.  Mk.13:14 “But when you see the abomination of desolation, then let those in Judea flee to the mountains.”  Jesus is addressing Peter, James, John, Andrew…they’re the “you”.  Some or all of them in earshot would still be alive at the time of the abomination of desolation!

Josephus recorded the words of high priest Anánus (murdered in 68 AD) in Wars of the Jews 4:3:10. “I had seen the house of God full of so many abominations, filled with the feet of the blood-shedding villains.”  Also Josephus wrote of Roman general Titus in 70 AD.  ibid. 6:4:7He went into the holy place of the temple with his commanders, and saw what was in it.”  That was an act of abomination!

Mk.13:18-19 Jesus instructed Peter, James, John, Andrew to “Pray that it may not happen in winter, for those days will be a time of tribulation”.  v.23 “Take heed; I have told you everything in advance.”  Peter, James, John, Andrew were informed in advance that the abomination of desolation, Jesus’ coming and the end of the age would occur during their lifespan.  Again, Jesus is specifically talking to them.  (A careful reading or rereading of Mk.13 should make this apparent.)

Mk.13:29-30 is key!  Jesus continued telling Peter, James, John, Andrew, “Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, know that He is near [g1451], right at the door. Truly I say to you, this generation won’t pass away until all these things take place.”  The generation of Peter, James, John, Andrew, to whom Jesus was speaking!  And when Jesus’ relative James wrote in the 50s AD, he knew Jesus was standing right at the door then, to come in judgment as Judge (Ja.5:9 quoted near the top).  Jesus concluded His Mk.13 discourse by telling Peter, James, John, Andrew, “What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be alert!”  To Peter, James, John, Andrew and all that generation in Judea…you be alert!

Mt.23:13-ff Jesus pronounced seven woes against those leading scribes & Pharisees who opposed Him.  v.33-36 “You serpents, you brood of vipers. Truly I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation [geneá g1074, noun].”  The generation of those who opposed Him!  Jesus told His disciples in Lk.17:25 that “He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation”.  Pulpit Commentary Lk.17:25 “The generation then living.”  Greek Bible scholar Spiros Zódiates on the meaning of the term geneá (g1074) here: “A multitude of contemporaries. Genea literally means a space of time. Jesus was telling them that this generation would not pass until all these things occurred, which has proven to be true. He was prophesying the destruction of their nation.”  Here genea didn’t refer to race, nativity.

The NT writers (quoted near the top) believed Jesus’ words…“generation” related to a space of time!  What would happen?  Jesus would come in judgment as Judge.  Mk.13:24-26 “The sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. The stars will be falling from heaven and the powers will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds.”  Such language to the ancient Hebrews meant the Lord’s judgment.

In OT times there were other such ‘day(s) of the Lord’, His comings in judgment.  Is.13:1, 9-10, 13, 17 described a previous “day of the Lord” (v.9), when He came in judgment against Babylon.  v.10 “The stars of heaven will not flash forth their light; the sun will be dark, and the moon will not shed its light.”  Subsequently, Babylon (v.1) fell to the Medes (v.17) in 539 BC.  Notice the language similarity of the heavenly signs in Mk.13:24-26 above!

Also, apocalyptic language was used in Is.34:4-6 to describe the Lord’s judgment upon Edom.  Edom fell to Babylon in 583 BC.  Je.27:6 Nebuchadnézzar of Babylon was God’s servant.  God used human armies with human nature to perform His judgment upon peoples.

Also Ezk.32:2, 7-12 “Take up a lament over Pharaoh, king of Egypt. When I extinguish you, I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. All the shining lights in the heavens I will darken over you.”  Accordingly, Egypt fell to Babylon in the 580s BC.

Also ref Am.8:8-11, 14 about the doom/captivity of Samaria in 722 BC.  Also in Je.21:7 God said Judea would be besieged/destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar.  Je.4:16 “Besiegers come from a far country…against the cities of Judah.”  v.27-28 “I looked and the heavens had no light, the mountains were quaking, and the heavens above are dark.”  The first temple, built by Solomon, was destroyed in 586 BC.

Also Jg.5:1, 4-5, 20 “The mountains quaked at the presence of the Lord. The stars fought from heaven against Siserá.”  Sisera and the Canaanítes were defeated.

Even Ps.18:6-17, when David was saved from his enemy Saul by God’s hand. “The earth shook and quaked. He bowed the heavens. Hailstones and coals of fire. The foundations of the world were laid bare. He delivered me from my strong enemy.”

That’s enough examples to illustrate the point.  In the above passages, the language of apocalyptic hyperbole with heavenly signs and earth upheaval indicated such judgments/overthrow wasn’t of man’s devising.  Since mankind doesn’t have control over the heavenly bodies or earth shakings, such language showed the judgments were God’s doing (also using human agents/armies).  Those historical occurrences, as recorded in scripture and by historians…didn’t mean the end of the globe or of time!

In Revelation, John used apocalyptic language similar to that in the above OT passages.  John’s 4th gospel doesn’t contain an account of Jesus’ Olivet prophecy (found in Mt.24, Mk.13, Lk.17 & 21 of the three synoptics).  John’s book of Revelation is like the Olivet Prophecy expanded extensively; about the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of that age.  (also see “Babylon The Great’ in Revelation”.)

Murdering the Son of God has been called history’s worst crime!  Between the 40-year generation of 30–70 AD, two covenants existed simultaneously in the Land…both the Old and the New.  It was the last days of the Old Covenant/Levitical priesthood/temple age.  It was the end of the age pertaining to God’s theocracy that had existed for 1,600 years!  It ended in 70 AD with the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple.  Le.26:14-46, De. 28 recorded the end of the Old Covenant age, 1,600 years in advance.

The Jewish Alfred Edersheim’s The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, pp.444-5: “Judgment on their city and state, this destruction of their polity, was the ‘Coming of the Son of Manin judgment. The second appearance would be invisible but real. There were those standing there who would not taste death, till they had seen the destruction of the city and state. ‘This generation should not pass away.”

In Mt.16:27-28, Jesus told His disciples that He would come with His angels.  “There are some of those standing here who shall not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming.”  Some disciples would see His coming before they died, others would die prior to His coming.  Pulpit Commentary Mt.16:28 “This advent is doubtless the destruction of Jerusalem.”  Cambridge Bible “The fall of Jerusalem…best fits the conditions of interpretation.”  (If Jesus had in mind His Transfiguration which took place only a week later, Mt.17:1-8, it’d be senseless to contrast that some of His disciples wouldn’t die before then!)

In Jn.21:20-23, Jesus indicated to Peter that John might still be alive when He comes. “If I want him [John] to remain until I come, what is that to you?”  (Peter wouldn’t remain, v.17-19, 2Pe.1:14-15.)  Gill Exposition Jn.21:22 “Till He should come and take vengeance on the Jewish nation, in the destruction of their city and temple by the Romans…till which time John did live.”  Bengel’s Gnomen “The time of the Lord’s coming succeeds immediately after the destruction of Jerusalem…which advent John obtained the privilege of describing in the Apocalypse [Revelation].”  Also, Re.1:7 indicated that some who “pierced Him” (put Jesus to death) will still be alive at His “coming”.

Note: Paul didn’t walk with Jesus; Paul came along later (1Co.15:8).  It seems Paul wrongly thought that in his lifetime Jesus would return to earth in glory to fully rule and change the kósmos (g2889).  So Paul even advised saints in Greece not to marry!  What!?  Because Paul thought time was “short….the form of this world is passing away” (1Co.7:27-31).

Some Bible prophecies are open-ended concerning the time of their fulfillment.  Some prophecy and scenes of Revelation extend far into the future (e.g. Re.20-22).  But others do give time constraints.  Many books of the Bible were someone else’s mail, written to them specifically.  Revelation made imminent sense for seven churches of that era (Re.2-3).

Jesus warned one of those seven churches, Ephesus, in Re.2:5 KJV. “Repent, or I will come to you quickly [tachu g5035], and will remove your candlestick out of its place.”  The same Greek adverb tachu was examined above.  Today the site of Ephesus is abandoned ruins.  Jesus came to judge Ephesus many centuries ago.  He removed it!  The vanishing of the Ephesian church is mute testimony to the meaning of tachu/“quickly” in the book of Revelation!

Although moral principles of scripture do have universal application, not all prophecies pertain to all nations in all ages.  Prophecy concerning the age-ending destruction of the temple/Jerusalem, with Jesus coming in judgment against them…happened.  (By the way, I’m not a ‘full/hyper preterist’!)

Again, did the original apostles who spent 3 years with Jesus misinform the early church by saying the 1st century AD was the last days and the end of an age?  Did the indwelling HS inspire their words?

In regards to the coming of Christ, a present-day church leader said, “We can forgive the disciples for thinking this was an event that would come in their lifetime”.  That man thought the disciples erred!

Scholars & intellectuals, such as Bertrand Russell, Albert Schweitzer, and others, understood the NT grammar did clearly reflect Jesus saying He would return during His disciples’ generation!  Those skeptics weren’t Christians; they just thought Jesus was a false prophet and NT writers had erred.

But Jesus wasn’t a false prophet.  He did as He said!  Jesus’ final red-letter words in our Bible are at the end of Revelation.  Re.22:20 “Surely I AM coming quickly [g5035].”  He came quickly, just as He said!  Jesus’ coming, in the sense understood by the apostles who walked with Jesus in the Land, who heard His Olivet prophecy…happened, as written.  1Jn.2:18 John wrote, it was then even the “last hour” (of the Old Covenant age).  John was correct.  That 11th hour came and went nearly 2,000 years ago.

Theologian R.C. Sproul isn’t a full preterist.  The Last Days According to Jesus, p.169, 30 “…What is at stake here is the authority of Jesus, and we must be consumed with maintaining His authority. I am convinced that the substance of the Olivet Discourse was fulfilled in 70AD and that the bulk of Revelation was likewise fulfilled in that time-frame….No matter what view of eschatology we embrace, we must take seriously the redemptive-historical importance of Jerusalem’s destruction in 70AD.”

God’s judgment on Jerusalem/Judea and the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, as foretold by Jesus in the gospels…is proof that Jesus was a true prophet!  Jesus and primitive Christianity are for real!

Many churches and teachers could at least modify their eschatology, so they don’t make it seem that Jesus or His original apostles or the HS were in error.  Surely, God doesn’t make mistakes.  We can have trust and confidence that the written words inspired by the HS are true!

However, all the above (e.g. God’s judgment) isn’t to say that history can’t repeat itself, or that Jesus won’t come again (Jn.14:3, Ac.1:9-11, 3:19-21).  And we believe our God is a just Judge, and He is merciful!  Praise God!
